Over the next three weeks we’ll be dropping the top three No Filter episodes of the year into your feed, alongside our usual brand new episodes. We’ve loved making them for you and hoping you’ve enjoyed listening. Thank you for your support this year, especially if you’re a Mamamia subscriber, and we can’t wait to tell more stories in 2023.

Until she was 40, every aspect of Julia Haart’s life, was tightly, tightly controlled. What she ate, what she thought, what she wore, and what she was allowed to do in a day. Julia was part of an ultra-Orthodox community in New York – a type of extreme form of religion called Haredi Judaism. But, after having 4 kids, Julia decided to escape.
Before we jump in, just a quick note - and some context.
It’s important to bear in mind that these are Julia’s personal experiences. They do not speak for the many and varied experiences of all Jewish women - Orthodox, Ultra-Orthodox, or otherwise.
And on those terms - ‘Orthodox’ and ‘Ultra-Orthodox’ - while we use them interchangeably, it’s important to note that actually,  Julia’s experience is within an Ultra-Orthodox community of Monsey, New York. This is just one niche sect in a spectrum of many, each with varying customs.
This is part one of her story…

Such a horrific story, thanks so much for sharing. This poor woman, our systems are so messed up. If she had money, power or connections, I’m sure it would be a different story.

Why is Mia constantly talking about her feminist imperative and yet working with a man complicit in the entire Harvey Weinstein ordeal?
Not sure what this podcast nor any of the mamamia content achieves any longer.

To be greedy or not

I'm keen to see if the last 3 episodes are an anomaly in going back to the original format (one episode unsplit versus one episode split into two with the first as click bait for the second "half" requiring a paid subscription) or the greed will continue.

Have tried to listen but honestly after the appalling treatment given to Virginia Tapscott I haven’t managed to get through a whole interview… well not that you get a whole interview without paying. It took a lot to come back to listen after the Roxanne Gay incident but the current direction of the interviews and the bait and switch for the second half of the interviews is the final turnoff.

The guests on this show have some really interesting stories - always different, always fascinating! I don’t always agree with their perspectives and can’t always relate to their experiences, but the content is engaging nonetheless. Mia (interviewer) has a way of putting her guests at ease, asking the tough questions but in such a way they do not feel intrusive or uncomfortable. Highly recommend!

I love this podcast. Some of the interviewees I have found fascinating, some OK and some maddening. However, ain’t that the point? I love an interview show that interviews a range of people. I find the range of humans to be the most dynamic feature of this podcast. Mia listens well and has questions I genuinely want to know. It’s a solid, Australian, female led podcast and I’m all for it.
