Merry Christmas! Join Andy and Una, plus authors Louie Stowell and Robert Shearman, for a post-solstice celebration of Asterix and the Roman Agent (1972) by René Goscinny (words) and Albert Uderzo (pictures), first published in France in 1970 as La Zizanie, and freely translated into English by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge. Christmas was a festival unknown to the residents of the little Gaulish village, whose adventures took place circa 50 BC. Few childhood Christmases of the 1970s and 80s were complete, however, without one or more Asterix adventures under the tree, so we do our best to mention every single one in this episode. We hear an archive interview with Goscinny and Uderzo themselves, and delve into the history behind the history of one the most successful comic strips in history. In addition, this is probably the most visual episode of Backlisted to date, so it's just as well we filmed it - the video is available on YouTube, and contains all manner of special treats. May we take this opportunity to thank you for your support in 2025, by Toutatis, and wish you all a magic potion-fuelled Christmas and New Year.

Fungus

Just listened to the bogeyman Raymond Briggs episode. Got tears in my eyes. I loved the Fungus book which I feelarrived inour school library in1978. InAustralia. But maybe it was 1977.

Brilliant books podcast

Listening to John, Andy, Nikki and their guests discuss books and also films, music and everything else is a constant delight. They are both erudite and fun. Their chats are wonderfully civilised and informative. They are so enthusiastic about the books and writers they like or love that even with over 50 years of reading behind me, I constantly learn new things. The only risk is an ongoing extension to the list of books to be read!

Backlisted is a delight!

I have listened now to two episodes of this program and am just transfixed. The first was focused on Heyer’s Venetia but ranged all over in a most entertaining way.
The second was one of their Locklisted series during the current pandemic. As well as books this included discussion of ‘The Lark ascending’ (wow - three versions of the same fragment played and truly an education) and other music.
It just does not matter if you have read the main book topic as these podcasters bring it to life.
Highly recommended.

Brilliant

Fascinating. So many books that I don't know but fascinated to find out about as they are spoken about intelligently, amusingly and interestingly. Keep them coming.

Podcast perfection

I am totally in love with you guys. Your passion for classic literature is truly my number one podcast listening pleasure. Although it is proving detrimental to my TBR but I love that I am discovering so many wonderful reads.

I want to like this but I can't stand...

... the way that the guys who host this show talk over the guests. (It's one in particular but I don't know which one by name.) I find it too painful to listen any more despite loving the selection of books.

Echo

How disappointing is it to find a new podcast that you love and then they move recording locations and the recording has an irritating echo!! 😫 Unsubscribed 🙁

Cannot praise high enough

This podcast has enhanced my reading life immensely but first and foremost is a highly entertaining, informative and comforting listen. I particularly appreciate all the other cultural references to musicians, films etc and the fact that every single work referenced in an episode is listed on the website. I feel I have many new and ongoing areas of literary and cultural interests thanks to this show. I just wish I could access more of the books and movies mnetioned from Australia.

High end literary conversations

I’m new to Backlisted but it already feels like a podcast I could settle in with for a long, leisurely listen. The whole project is a terrific antidote to a tendency to fixate on the the past five minutes, or indeed the next five minutes. This program isn’t selling anything, save for lively conversation and a great love of good writing. The podcast draws upon decades of reading and reflection, and seems to effortlessly entertain and inform. They’re not above a little bit of literary gossip, either, which is nice. The conversations are enthusiastic without being gushing. The episode on Anita Brookner is a case in point. And while each episode has a focus, you will find any number of other books and writers getting a mention. Also worth noting is the use of added audio clips, which gives a richer texture. And crucially, the presenters are not afraid to read aloud from the books, which of course is what it is all about. In short, a gem.

Master podcasters

I love this enthusiastic podcast. Sometimes I am familiar with the authors of books chosen and very occasionally I have read the book but always I am fired with literary fervour by the end of the show. On at least one occasion, the reminder of a book I loved made me nostalgically teary. Thank you for the championing of the ´middle brow’.

Book-nerdy delight

I love this podcast, for the blurb reading, the range of titles, the chit chat, the publishing-insider asides, the appreciation of a lovely edition by audio proxy... It's an unmissable item in my podcast playlist, and I recommend it to book co-conspirators with great glee. I'm about a year behind on the backlist, though, so you'll forgive me if this has changed in the interim -- but do you delete out the bits where one of you *doesn't* like the book? Surely you can't really, all, like or love, every, single, book? If so, you are all models of the perfect publisher and reviewer! Thank you, and keep podding.

Excellent discussion of books

Well considered and produced discussion of (usually) older, out of print books. The regular hosts are very well read, and knowledgeable and share a genuine and infectious enthusiasm for writing and the world of books.

The best!

This is one of the best books podcasts out there, if not the best. I would highly recommend combining this podcast with the Guardian books podcast and that way you get the best of new and old (at least older) great books.
The only thing I would be wary of is that you will spend a lot of money as a result of listening to this podcast, I think I have bought about 25 books in the last year as a direct result of listening in.
