Description
A kaleidoscope of colour and culture clash humourously as an Indian family in London tries to raise their soccer-playing daughter in a traditional way. Unlike her tarty older sister, who is preparing for a lavish Indian wedding and a lifetime of cooking delicious dishes, Jess dreams of playing soccer professionally, like her hero, British soccer superstar, David Beckham. Wholeheartedly against Jess’ unorthodox ambition, her parents eventually reveal that their reservations have more to do with protecting her, than with holding her back. This movie is positive. It is Keira Knightley’s best role. The film tells the story of a person with good qualities who believes that an uninhibited innocent person can be great. The movie is about breaking through family expectation and so investigates the values of an Indian family living in London. A quarter of the movie is dedicated to the family relationship which is where the film turns into a c class Bollywood film, although there is no dancing. The rest of the film is a professional production of a moving story. The viewer does not need to enjoy soccer to enjoy this film, it is the setting not the feature of the story. The title ‘Bend it like Beckham’ refers to the skill of kicking a ball so that it spins and curves in the air to a degree similar to that of the famous football player.
