Great account of Australian and German WWI naval history
This book is an eminently readable account of the operations of the Imperial German Navy and Royal Australian Navy in the Indian and Pacific oceans leading up to and after the outbreak of World War One, obviously with an emphasis on the SMS Emden and those who hunted her down. For me this book provided previously unknown insights into the battle that saw the destruction of the Emden and the extraordinary escape across half the planet of some of her crew. This is a scholarly treatment of the subject, but which engages the reader through fascinating primary sources such as personal journals, letters, media and official reports. In characteristic Carlton style he pulls no punches when it comes to certain individuals. Thoroughly recommended for history and naval buffs (who will be pleased by the level of technical and tactical detail)
