Description

Sunday Times Memoir of the Year 2023
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow-and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling-and how their lives would play out from that point on.
For Harry, this is that story at last.
Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness-and, because he blamed the press for his mother's death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight.
At twenty-one, he joined the British Army. The discipline gave him structure, and two combat tours made him a hero at home. But he soon felt more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and prone to crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn't find true love.
Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple's cinematic romance and rejoiced in their fairy-tale wedding. But from the beginning, Harry and Meghan were preyed upon by the press, subjected to waves of abuse, racism, and lies. Watching his wife suffer, their safety and mental health at risk, Harry saw no other way to prevent the tragedy of history repeating itself but to flee his mother country. Over the centuries, leaving the Royal Family was an act few had dared. The last to try, in fact, had been his mother. . . .
For the first time, Prince Harry tells his own story, chronicling his journey with raw, unflinching honesty. A landmark publication, Spare is full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

A very mentally disturbed man feeling very sorry for himself, seeing a lot of negativity in his life and not accepting everything good in his life and family, Every sibling fights and have very different a outlook on life whether it be royal or poor person but we just get on with it and not say poor me my family do not like my partner !! We are all the same

Fake news

Extremely sympathetic towards the pair of them. They can apparently do no wrong and are the most altruistic humans to have walked the earth.
A fairytale perspective told by a man-child.

Spare

I did have preconceived notions thinking that I wouldn’t feel it was honest and I couldn’t have been more wrong. If you can get past the beginning (which feels different to the rest) it felt like a true and honest telling of Harry’s life. I never believed most of what the press said but had no idea how vindictive the press could be. I thought the word spare meant he felt sorry for himself and envious but it was nothing like that at all. I hope Harry and Megan have found a measure of peace now and wish them well. Another follow up book would be good in 30 years lol. Their family is welcome at my place in Australia any time xoxo

The Media have a lot to answer for

Well done Harry . Thank you for the insight into your life, I feel for you and your family. The media have
Blood on their hands.
Every human being deserves respect and privacy. Harry you are the meat in the sandwich, here are some many players
The royal family
The media
Harry and Meghan
Every one has their angle. This is so sad because we are born alone and we die alone but for money and power people will change sides, in one second.
Ps
How great would it be if William was the spare and Harry was to be next in line to be king.

Interesting Book. Congrats to Harry.

It definitely showed a different perspective of what Royal life is really like. There are very strict rules of what they can and can’t do. They certainly didn’t get a chance to be like everyday citizens. I remember William being labeled as a bully in early school days so wasn’t surprised about his bullying tactics of Harry later in life. I also didn’t realise how much the paparazzi bagged Meghan. I understand why they moved away from the Royals. The paparazzi have a lot to answer for.

Relative

Insightful. And exactly what was read in between the lines of press and other satire.
I hope they find peace in their new lives.
Just goes to show how better placed the queen was than any future kings. And that her advisors (older white men) took advantage at the end.
Tragic yet hopeful.

Fascinating Insight & History

Very well written, engaging and moderate. The British Press have been awful - aided and abetted by the public’s consumption of the trashy headlines & by the Palace’s silence on it or perhaps fuel of it.
All made more difficult by questions of cost, sources of income and the complete absence of privacy or forgiveness of youthful mistakes - which I’m sure everyone has committed if they are honest with themselves.

Made me think …

I bought Harry’s book out of interest wanting to hear how life has unfolded for him. I’m so glad I did. It’s an excellent read - eye opening, informative and really well written. In fact, it has changed my perspective of the institution that I thought was generally ok. British Royalty. The bit that gets to me is the cold hearted treatment of Harry and later Meghan for no good reason by some of his family and various royal staffers. The shameful practices of the British press are downright nasty and unnecessary.
Yes, it made me think long and hard and that’s a good thing. If the content is biased and only half true - a very tentative ’if’ - then, even so, Harry n Meghan I feel for you.

Spare

What a load of rubbish ,will not waist my time buying anymore of his books .Why would his family want him back to visit ,it would end up in the next book .. you don’t do this to family .what a sick man someone should have read this before it went out and deleted most of it ..I have no time for him or his evil wife who supposedly knew nothing of the royal family ,his book contradicted everything that they said on Netflix …The Bow was the stand out ,how could she make fun of the Queen like that and he is worse than anything his family did making fun of the school teacher .He is garbage in my book…

Beautiful

Harry has given us a rare and honest glimpse into the royal family. But more importantly a glimpse into his heart. Such an eye opener to the true operations behind the monarchy.
He has built a beautiful life with his wife & I am happy for them

Expected more

Whilst I liked this book, I expected more given the hype. It dragged on in parts too. Still a good story to understand the other side of what we didn’t hear and see in the media but i don’t believe it’s worth the price either !

Spare not

An excellent read of an expose about the inner workings of the British Royal Family and the way it was run as could only be told by a disgruntled and discarded “spare” hellbent on getting even with those who has wronged him and his family. It is hard to believe some of the things that was done until I read this book. It was an extremely privileged life.
Believe me when I tell you I am quite difficult to entertain : I skipped much of Barack Obama’s “A Promised Land” when he talked about his policies and I gave up on Michelle Obama’s audio book when she started talking too much about her children. I spent my money already, definitely did not want to suffer through it as well.
I really enjoyed these books by Presidents and privileged people that allowed me to take a glimpse of their life which would otherwise be completely foreign to me.
I find myself supporting Harry’s position all the time and pitied that of Willy and Pa. The way I see it, these two can only have the survival of the monarchy be their absolute top priority. And this is an always changing target. The modernising of the monarchy cannot move faster than the feelings of the general public in the UK. As soon as Brexit won the voting, you know the general UK public is not ready. The general public from the Commonwealth are irrelevant.

Harry and Meg - integrity

Thank you Prince Harry and Meghan for sharing your story of truth and integrity and honour.
What you have both been through was shocking and horrifying.
Also many of us never believed any of that rubbish.
Please believe that. You writing skills are impeccable. You must of learned something Harry! Haha!

Tales of derring-do

The entire book is written in a ripping yarns, tales of derring-do adventures of an English schoolboy style for 14-year olds. Here is a boy who hasn’t grown up yet. I found it a boring and repetitive read.

A very interesting read. An insight to Harry’s royal life after is mothers death and how he had to fight for his family.

An informative and well written exposė of royal life.

I’m glad Prince Harry got to give his side of the story. To expose the hideous press and stuffiness of those behind the Royal family desperate to keep up appearances - no matter the cost.
There were a few moments in the book where I thought “too much information there” - a little cringeworthy, but at the end of the day, Harry is just a real person like everyone else.

Prince Harry.

Thank you so much for writing this book, it is absolutely brilliant, very easy to read and so well written. I’m convinced it couldn’t have been an easy book to write but you, obviously, wrote it from the heart. I feel that I know you now, you and your very beautiful family. Thank you so very much, young man, Your Royal Highness. God Bless You. Eileen Patterson.

Couldn’t put this book this down, loved every moment and finally hearing their side of the story. Definitely worth the read and seriously hoping that there might be more in the future. Good luck to them both and may they continue to fight the good fight against the press.

Commending your brave heart; wishing you a love filled future

Dear Harry
It takes true bravery to tell your story, that acknowledges your own struggles and faults, putting it down for all to see when you also know there will be hate and bitterness towards you, but your love and evolving soul shines through!
Use this life so far of intense pressure and loss to create a diamond future built on love and helping others, and use that strength to leave the anger, the feuds and the hatred of media behind. I lost my Father suddenly at 19 despite doing CPR for 30 mins then have lost 3 brothers too young in shocking circumstances. The pain and anger takes all your effort to get over but it is essential to find the peace you are looking for and helping others focusing on agape it the best healer of the soul. I wish you wisdom, good luck and above all peace and love.

Harry’s story

I wasn’t sure what to think before reading this, I was guarded about the perspective in which I had Harry in my own head. But, I stand corrected in my judgement I had made towards him and have some empathy in what he has endured in his lifetime. I wish you all the happiness in what your next chapters in your book of life hold for you and your immediate family

His Truth

I can't begin to imagine the pain this poor family endured, the tears rolled down my face as I read page by page. Thank you Harry for finally sharing your story. I often wonder how your family can run a monarchy when they can't even mend a broken relationship with their son / brother. (do they even know what the people really want, or are they so caught up in making themselves look good).
10/10 on all levels! P.s not all of us read the tabloids, know that there are a lot of people who love and support your every move.
Thank you x

Well reading this really put into perspective how bad they had it. I’m not fan of the royal or follow along much, but I am an advocate for mental health and “they” ruined Meg and Harry!

Enjoyable and honest

I thought it was very well written, interesting, warm and honest. The humour provides a welcome counter to the grief and pain. I think the criticism from the media seems to be overhyped and appears to be an effort to put people off reading the book but I’m glad I ignored it and read the book. It was a good read and drew me in from the beginning.

Superb memoir

If you can listen to it without bias and with empathy, I believe you’ll find this an incredible memoir. I made myself approach it that way and I think that’s what made it so powerful for me.
It’s raw, vulnerable and unabashed. He owns his flaws and the last chapters show great self reflection, insight and a concern for future generations imo. I am so pleased I got the audio and heard his story in his voice too.
He has my respect for having the guts to go there about the tabloids too. I’ve found myself sad for us as a society that we have allowed our gutter press to be so intrusive, unaccountable and powerful.
I’m happy I gave Harry my money for his story, he’s waited long enough to be the one telling it.
Imo every Brit who has a strong opinion against Harry would do themselves a favour by reading Spare in its entirety, rather than believing the vitriol of the press who have taken so much of it out of context, and who are in defence mode imo
