Very unreliable
So I've set this up for my last 3 swims to Rottnest and each time, according to supporters, it's hugely unreliable.

Description
MapSwim is tracking app for friends and family of swimmers taking part in the annual 20km Rottnest Channel Swim between the Pylon at Cottesloe and the Pub on Rottnest island, so that they can track the progress of their swimmers.
The app can be used by the crew on a swimmer's support boat to track their current location and distance from the start and finish.
MapSwim makes use your device's GPS in foreground and background in order to track your location.
You can disable the apps use of the GPS by changing the Location Services setting to "Never" via Settings -> MapSwim -> Location.
Please Note: "Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life."
The location captured by MapSwim can be shared with other users of the app, and with viewers of the mapswim.net web page, via switching on sharing.
The location of other swimmers can be viewed on a map which shows the current position of other swimmers, color coded by their team category.
What's New in Version 2021.0.347
This release has enhanced port to pub route information including boat holding areas and more accurate start and finish areas on the map.
This release has been rewritten using Swift and in the process has become more stable and reliable and also looks better on higher resolution devices.
Improvements have been made to the users control over sharing of location information withe clearer details of how the app will be using locaiton.
Many other minor improvements have been made, for example the swimmer icons are now larger so that the numbers can be more easily read.
This release also fixes an issue for some users where the app showed a black screen. Another issue where the map updated too frequently has also been fixed.
