One little thing

I truly love this app and I’m so grateful that they give us VIP for free for three days except I dislike when VIP goes away and you can only translate 5 times I with it was unlimited because I won’t know what anyone is saying to me.

Refund

Requested a refund because i accidentally subscribed to the VIP. I was told that it was not eligible for a refund despite not even using the app. I was just downloading the app to try but the language learning is just not there. It’s like a dating website guised as a language learning platform.

It’s getting worse

Used to be a really good platform for making friends and language exchange. These days it’s full of girls posting selfies and millions of guys messaging them. Chat rooms have also contributed to degrading the platform instead of enriching it. It’s become a cheaper version of tinder. Also can’t remove Likes anymore or check who has unfollowed.

Terrible learning dynamic - Overpopular women and desperate men

It’s like trying to learn a language and find a language partner in a nightclub. It’s a cringey app, all men flock to women for attention and women barely talk back. Men aren’t interested in talking with men and they seem to be only interested in women. While the women don’t respond either from overstimulation. The dynamic is not balanced. HelloTalk should assign partners and limit those partners so can focus on language learning.

This app was amazing, I liked it😸! It was particularly enjoyable and I’d recommend to friends! I downloaded this app only for learning and teaching languages but I suppose in the meantime I made some friends on the way😼❗️I think it’s a great app, but here comes the bad outcomes of the app! The developers literally made basic features into VIP!?🙀 do you know how much I was so disappointed and frustrated?!!! To be honest I was going to write a 4 star review but I supposed I changed my mind about the app😟!! The basic feature was ‘ unlock visitors page,” what do you mean visitors page?! I can’t see the visitors who checked my profile? It’s not like anyone checks it every time!😡 SERIOUSLY?! A basic feature? What kind of world are we living in? The 3000s??😤 and the other features? Unlimited translations’ what do you mean translations? Are you serious? What happens if someone desperately needs it? What kind frustrating nonsense is this?? Discrimination against the uncommon Chinese dialects.

If you try to find fellow speakers of anything (e.g. Min dialect - they cancelled the Hokkien channel) to practice, other than Cantonese or Shanghainese — forget it. Certain words in my dialect sound like swears in Mandarin but are actually day to day stuff. Non speakers wander in to report because they don’t understand what had been said and you just get banned for no reason.
🚨HelloTalk does nothing about the scammers who openly talk about how they cheat others out of money in their voice room, EVEN when reported. Not even suspension but they would ban a person for speaking dialect.
🚨If you want to report a scammer, don’t go confront them because they can create fake accounts to get you banned.

Not bad but not great

The idea and premise of the app is great however it is not perfect.
It is good that hello talk separates children and adults from each other however for people who freshly turn 18 i feel are still practically children. The amount of times 30+ year old men have talked to me and get mad at me for not responding is insane. Like friends id talk to would be at the bottom of my message lists cause of the crazy amount of older men texting me. While im sure not all have bad intentions I can’t help but feel uncomfortable. The app definitely has the power to implement better privacy but chooses not to (correct me on this but I have looked everywhere for a way to block my account away from older people in specific)

Loved it but …

If you're lucky enough to find someone serious for a language exchange, then the app can be fantastic. However, about 80% of the people I've talked to so far see it like a dating app, which (1) wastes your time and (2) can be disgusting, as in receiving unsolicited pics.

Scammers, bots and fake accounts

Warning: Avoid This App to Protect Yourself from Scammers
If you value your security and fairness, stay away from this app. The reporting system is fundamentally flawed, allowing scammers to exploit it for their own benefit. These bad actors operate multiple fake accounts and weaponize false reports against users who do not comply with their demands.
Unfortunately, the support team is completely ineffective. Rather than conducting proper investigations, they blindly accept reports from fraudulent accounts, leading to unfair account suspensions. This has happened countless times, as evidenced by thousands of complaints on Reddit from users who have been unjustly banned.
There is no ethical oversight, no professionalism, and seemingly no human intervention in their decision-making process. If you’re a serious language learner, avoid the risk and choose a more reliable platform like Duolingo or others that actually protect their users.

BREEDING GROUND FOR SCAMMERS

The worst app I’ve ever used. I got scammed by D D, Wan Wan and V v on HelloTalk. They are all from Myanmar! They are scammers pretending to be someone they’re not and scamming by having more friends (especially in voice rooms) than their targets. They ask for gifts. Their targets are vulnerable people who are lonely and depressed. Must AVOID!

This app is just terrible

Don’t get me wrong; I’ve never written a review for an app before because most apps haven’t really given me trouble—until now. Here’s what happened: I got banned for receiving too many reports from others, even though I never did anything wrong. All I did was use a profile picture of myself wearing a mask, hat, and glasses. They completely, and I mean “PERMANENTLY,” banned me from using the app ever again. When I reached out to them, they simply said I violated the terms and conditions for “using a political profile photo” and “not being a language partner.” Seriously? This is ridiculous.
I have never experienced anything like this in my life. I was always nice to everyone, and everyone treated me kindly in return, yet some random users reported me for my profile picture, and now I’m banned just like that. This is totally unacceptable! They should have at least given me a warning or asked me nicely to change my profile picture—that would have been reasonable. It’s not that hard to be fair. Getting banned over a funny profile pic because they consider it political is absurd! Meanwhile, others are using anime images or pictures of celebrities without any issues, and I just want to use my own photo. It feels so unfair to be treated like this. With all consideration, I do not endorse the use of this application.

Fake profiles and ads galore

I downloaded this app for a little over a week to help with learning Spanish. In that time, I had a LOT of people from various locations in South America hit me up. I thought it was great, but very quickly every single one of them got very flirty (one guy in particular very dirty). All the women called me handsome, all the men were suddenly gay or bi and saying the same. Everyone wanted an intro to my friends over here. I don't know if it's spam, bots, or just a platform for mail order marriages, but it doesn't make it worth the constant barrage of ads and limitations on the free content. I just bought Super Duolingo on the end of year sale instead.

AMAZING but ONE ISSUE

I’ve been using hellotalk for almost a year now and have made a few friends on here who i’ve kept for the entire time and it’s made me a lot more enthusiastic about learning a new language and understanding in a way that i previously never did. HOWEVER… it made a new update and i need to say that there was this ONE feature i REALLY liked even if it had VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH LANGUAGE LEARNING… it was the little doodle feature where you could draw ☹️ it was so cute and my and my friend used to send each other little drawings all the time and it was something we really liked and now it’s GONE
hellotalk staff or whoever oversees this PLEASE consider bringing it back 😭 it was one of the cutest lighthearted just fun things about chatting with friends and i really loved it, so if you could just put that back i would be extremely grateful
But genuinely this app is super good for people of any skill level of a new language, and it’s usually filled with people who are super nice (not always though). but that’s feature… please guys 😭😭😭

Discriminatory practice

Recent banning of a certain nationality from exercising full access to this app is discriminatory and appalling.
The restriction on political speech is understandable however what does that have to do with the exclusion of Palestinians on your platform? Can you imagine using a product or app that prevents someone taking advantage of the app features purely because of their country? Reconsider the apolitical image of your company before implementing policies and practices that do the opposite.

Translation

Hello,
I really enjoy this app, but I am frustrated that if someone posts a message with even one word in English first, then the rest in their native language, the translation function will not work.

In concept the app is great however if your broke and not willing to pay for it don’t bother, there’s not much you can do or see without paying. also it is rlly buggy when learning words and I don’t think it’s a me problem cos I just got my new phone :/

2023 Mac Mini M2 Pro 16GB RAM 1GB SSD

Now works unlike the past but crashes when clicking to view a single larger photo using this Ipad App using Apple Silicon on a Mac. I hope that this issue will be fixed because everything else works brilliantly. I have raised my rating from 1 when it didn't work at all to 3 at the moment. I will give it a 5 when the above is fixed. An option to view HT in portrait mode like Duolingo is also recommended.

Great app for meeting people

I have used this app for a long time, I have made many friends and improved languages a lot by using it. My 1 star is for the recent implementation and spruiking of paid practice. It’s constantly asking if I want to pay someone to practice, it’s annoying and working more as a deterrent than an incentive to use the app. Plus on my one or two scrolls through the people requesting paid practice, not one of them appears to be a teacher or anyone of any value to improving the learning experience. I get these apps want to make more money, but this paid practice is just stupid. Implement it sure, but stop asking users if they want to pay, one and done is enough to ask.

Nice to Meet People but disappointed with customer service

I’ve made friends through this app. I’ve had issues with the technical responses, they just tell you what to do, no customer service. I got banned from the Voice Room for responding to a prohibited topic. The other person did not get banned and he asked me about a sexual topic and I responded.

Disappointing

Immediately asks you to sign up for VIP as soon as you download the app. Like, at least let me try the app before you start shoving the VIP membership down my throat? Also, I have multiple native languages - yet I’m unable to add them without buying VIP. I can’t even figure out a way to change my one (1) permitted native language to something else. Annoying. I can’t actually speak on the quality of the language learning of this app as I am not able to do much without forking over close to $90 every 6 months. Hard pass.

Ads. It’s all about ads.

Sure functionality you can communicate with people. But holy moly the amount of ads that and in your feed, messages, notifications, scrolling etc. intrusive in every single way to annoy you so you pay for another subscription service. The user experience is second to profit motives. And it shows. Like I said it functions but there are other alternatives out there to learn another language.

Great app, interface a little unintuitive

I get to talk to many natives ( learning Japanese rn), the free learning features are good and the premium price is reasonable. I will probably go premium soon. Better experience than Tandem to be honest.

Annoying

Been using the app for nearly a year. Pretty good in general made some ok friends. But when I shared a google form with friends my account got suspended. They said I wanted money but no, it was just for my commerce subject. Honestly disappointing to see everything go.

Great app for language learning

I’ve been using the app for nearly two years. I’m finding it’s a great way to have conversations with people from the target language. So many people likeminded wanting to learn language all over the world.
Sometimes I can’t have conversations with everyone but finding some good language partners has been valuable.
I’m also realising finding creative ways to learn is important and having people at different times when I’m available to respond is what helps me. Thank you HelloTalk.

Please delete my user data and account

I have had very poor experience with app since I installed this app. I have been harassed by scammers mostly and now I am told I have been suspended due to providing fake native languages/nationality? This can be only revoked if I provided a video of myself speaking the native languages? I just cannot simply believe an international company would do this on top of the amount of ads bombarding the app page already.

Backing up messages

It’s a great app but backing up messages has never worked before which is extremely annoying. I’ve backed up my messages many times and deleted the app but it never works. Seems pointless to provide a function that doesn’t work. Otherwise the app is fantastic for language learning :)

i love it 🫶

hello talk is one of the best apps i’ve ever used for language learning ! you can learn efficently from natives which helps you improve on your language skills 🤩 !! everyone on the app are so so nice except for the people who try to use it to date -__- but apart from that, everyone one is willing to help you and they dont put you down for your mistakes :) if you want to improve in whatever language you’re learning, i recommend this app 🤭

Great app, made many friends

Honestly yes I do quite like this app! I have met many kind people on here. I have learnt so much about my target languages. By one & only qualm is that you HAVE to declare a gender, & does not give an option for unspecified/other at the very least. Which is unfortunate. So hopefully that is added in the future to be more inclusive. Otherwise, good app.

Great app and outstanding customer service

I have used this app for more than 4 years. I decided to buy the lifetime VIP membership and its really worth it. Unlimited translations and lots of languages to switch between eg you can change languages and learn multiple languages at the same time.
I think it works best if you are patient and prepared to give something back, as in make regular posts in your language to share so others can learn. Understanding that the beginner you are communicating with may only know a few words or can speak well but cannot write. Learning a language I think is like learning a Musical instrument, it takes regular practice, a good teacher and a chance to perform what you have learnt. Hellotalk gives you the tools to makes this possible and you will meet some great language partners to have regular exchanges. Really great app 10/10

It’s fabulous

I really love this app. It provides a fantastic opportunity to meet people world wide and practice your chosen learning language with native speakers. As with all online experiences at times interactions can be mixed, but with time it becomes easy to work out how to interact safely and find people with a focus on learning language at a similar level.

Great app for language exchange

This is the best app ever I’ve used for language exchange. People I met were mostly serious about language learning and the various functions are quite handy. It would be better if I could choose not to have red dots notifying me of my visitors. And I’m sorry to say this but your logo design is terrible. Looks like some kind of brain disease.

Improvements to be made...

I love the app and I’ve been using it for years, but you really need to add a neutral gender option to your profile settings. It’s ignoring the traditional culture of many places where neutral gender identity is ingrained and even sometimes spiritual, and it’s exclusionary for queer culture and non-binary gender identity in the modern world. The app is great, but this is outdated and needs to be changed.

Disappointed

I used to love this app. I was able to connect with people from all over the world and share my love of language. I am disappointed in the way they assumed my identity and native language, changed my profile without consulting me and then alluded to the fact that I wasn’t of my registered nationality. Now the app settings have changed for me and I’m not able to benefit as I was before and I have to justify who I am ? I understand they may be trying to screen to ensure only ‘qualified’ people can teach a ‘native language’, but there are more professional and respectful ways to do so.

Good app but...

This is a great app for learning languages and socialising with people. However I wish we had the ability to edit the age we put in. I accidentally put in the wrong age for myself and I can’t change it.
It’d be super helpful if you could change it

Poor safety and reporting issues

No robust and timely mechanism to block repeat stalkers. I’ve had one person create 6+ accounts in a week to stalk me and yet hellotalk does nothing. I’ve reported it twice. No action. Very disappointed. Doesn’t matter if I block one account because they can create 5 other accounts so easily.
How can one IP address be allowed to create so many different hellotalk accounts, all 1 or 2 days old only, and harass people freely? Hellotalk doesn’t allow you to write a message about the issue to explain or contact them. The current reporting system is poor. All you can do is attach an image and select a category of the issue from a pick list.

Great platform

I‘ve been using HT for few years and I find it very helpful tool to give and receive help when learning a new language. But of course the quality of the help depends of the partner you are lucky to find.
The process to access photos from a gallery and the synchronization of multiple devices could definitely be improved.
I definitely would recommend this app to friends.

Pretty excellent. Core to my learning.

I’ve found this app to be one of the few utopian places left in the digital spaces. Please, for the love of any supreme being, create a web app so I don’t need to use my phone! I like that there’s a whatsapp style pairing to desktop for chat but that’s super slow and it would be really great to be able to use the other features on desktop as well.

Has bugs... very annoying

Good app but has some super annoying bugs
Support was not helpful at all in helping and just kept asking for recordings despite me sending in many
Whenever I post a new moment, in the feed it will bring up all my old posts which I then have to scroll through, even after buying an entirely new phone this problem persists.... over it lol
Plus I’ve had a few creeps on here too 🤢 most people are nice

Great and wholesome (if not learning chinese 😂)

It's a really well-made app and the community there is AMAZING. I havent had any phishers or thirsty people so far, and I've been learning heaps, even as someone learning Japanese in uni! There are so many functions that are so useful like translate, correction, voice msgs, etc. Only problems: mod response was kinda slow, my friend who's learning Chinese is only getting really thirsty men who want an English wife for permanent residency 😂 and also just a tiny amount of really small bugs, but compared to how good this app is, this app is totally worth it. 10/10 get it guys.

It’s a good app but please helpppp!

Ok so hellotalk is probs my fav app of all time but there is one thing! Ok when I first made my account, I selected the wrong age and now I can’t change it! The same problem has happened to other people sometimes with gender but it’s really annying and I don’t want people thinking I’m a 13 year old, and knowing me for my actual age and for who I really am! So if u could please update the app so people can change their game and gender if they need to. That would be great! It would also make sense if the age would update once our bday comes aswell. (Not sure if it already does tho). But yea that’s it thx!!! ♥️♥️♥️

Good BUT

Premium members should be able to add more that 3 languages that they’re learning. I am learning more and the reason I am not a premium member is because I can’t add all of the languages I am learning without having to change one. Just a suggestion. :)

Great app!

This is a fantastic app to learn a language from native speakers! While not everyone bothers to answer to you, I have met a few great people who are keen to learn English and are just as helpful when I have questions for them. I set my profile so that I can only be found by women, so haven’t experienced the issues with creepy men that others have had. I haven’t upgraded to VIP yet because the link to HelloSpanish made me want to buy that product first instead! Coupled with a face to face intensive course that I’m doing separately, I’m hopeful that this will take my Spanish to the next level. Well done, developers! 👍🏻

How?

I recently deleted the app by accident and it was linked to an old email account I want to start again but I can’t create a new account on this device as the old account is still active. I also can’t access my old account how do I overcome this problem.
HelloTalk response was excellent thanks so much for your help now I can continue using this fantastic app.

Useful app, however...

I have no idea why, but as soon as I decided to temporarily switch my target language to Spanish; I have so many men treating me as a potential romantic or sexual partner.
It is nothing short of annoying and disturbing to be called “precious”, as I was once, by a complete stranger and even have someone get jealous, passively aggressively claiming, “must be your boyfriend,” or something, after I decided not to reply to their last texts.
I should not have to explain my dating status to anyone, especially because this is meant to be a place for language exchange and nothing else more. You need to track down people who are just trying to hook up with foreigners regularly and get rid of them. I just want to better learn a language, not talk about relationships.

I love this app so much, it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. After having it for only a few days I’ve already having a bunch of conversations with people just like me. I also really like the correction feature, it makes things so much easier, and this whole idea is just brilliant. I’m learning so much already! If you want to practice conversation, this is definitely for you.

Good but it kicks me out

Up until yesterday, the app was running perfectly. This morning when I tried to open the app, it kept loading onto my message screen and then not allowing me to do anything. The screen was completely frozen on my messages, not allowing me to open anything, then kicking me out after a couple of seconds.

Good app but unhelpful team

It’s a good social learning app unfortunately my experience with messaging their support team was nothing less than frustrating. Stupidly when setting up my account, I chose a language I wanted to learn as my nationality without realising I couldn’t change it later on. I simply asked them to change my nationality to English since I’m from an English speaking country (Aus) and can only teach English in exchange, but they refused to change it without proof of identity. I told them I do not want to send them my own personal documents/ID for my own safety but they still told me the same thing. Shame I won’t be using this app anymore now that I’ll have to teach myself a language (my ‘native’ language) before teaching someone else 😆
HelloTalk, maybe you can ask people for proof of nationality at the START of the setup to be fair???

I really like it.

This definitely helps, I met some people and they helped teach their language to me and stuff that I struggled on. I love it but I wish we could post videos. I’ve wanted to post videos of big landscapes and instead of showing half of it on photos which is pretty annoying. Hopefully we can post videos.

Social network learning

Connect with people seeking to trade languages with you and chat to make friends or whatever. It's more useful to ask directed questions or post daily blogs but the app is such a mixed bag for learning.
You can send voice messages, text messages and a feature newly implemented is just one-tap translation which translates a message as soon as you tap on it. You can hold down on the message to see further features like saving the message for later, replying directly to that message or correcting it. When you correct a message you can add notes in the bottom section which is where you should add language tips every single time. There's nothing worse than being given something new as a learner and no information behind it.
You need to be upgraded to do video calls but you can do voice calls for free. You can record voice messages in private chat and for moments but the max time allowance is 1 minute. Upgrading also gives the opportunity to learn more than one language or set more than one fluent language.
If you want to send pictures you have to exchange five messages with someone first and you can't post videos in the moments section. I believe to would make the app lag too much. You can also draw pictures via the palette icon in the moments section.
I think the block feature could be improved in that when you block someone or are blocked you are still able to view their profile and see everything they post. What's the point? It only stops them from posting on your posts and from sending you messages. You also can't unblock people.
There are also several tabs in moments to sort what you see:
Default: People speaking the language you learn and learn the one you speak.
Following: People you're following.
Learn: People who speak the language you learn.
Classmates: People who speak your language and are learning the one you learn.

Hello talk problems

Generally the function is reasonable, the layout is pretty poor and you can’t see if you have other notifications when chatting or reading posts. You will be monitored when using this app so please take care about that, the developers will block or partiality block you from posting pictures and restrict who see’s what you post.. usually for no reason at all or that someone you refused to talk to reported you.
If you are concerned about privacy you should find another app these people collect mac addresses to block people... and IMIE numbers to block devices.. so I rate this at 2 stars for the developers (the coders) minus a million for bad monitoring practices..

Great! But I have a bug

This app is really good for connecting to others and learning a different language. I’ve met many people on here who I now consider my closest friends.
The issue is... for the last week or two, the app keeps bugging out and saying I have 10 notifications despite not having anything. Even when I go into the app, it still has the 10 notifications. Please help!
