What's New in Version 6.1.1

We fixed a bug that caused iPad users to lose their place in a story after leaving the app.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” —Martin Luther King Jr., August 1963 issue

The Atlantic is the antidote for those who have become overcome with gloom about the current state of journalism. It presents variety, provocation, entertainment and intelligence.

Like the vast majority of people (I would imagine) I flick in and out of apps. One really frustrating thing about this app is that it does not remember where I was up to or what I was reading. If I reopen the app an hour or two, it will just go back to its homepage. The New Yorker app is much better at this - I can reopen the app days later and it will go right back to where I left off.

Very frustrating

I'm only writing this review because I can't read the Atlantic. With the new update I can read one screen's worth while my device labours to download whatever the banner across the bottom is, then everything locks up. Very frustrating.

Hi.
I have had the pleasure of accessing the Atlantic Magazine app for a while now and it has generally been very good. Except - the last few days every article has the same "disqus" comments at the bottom that have nothing to do with the article I've just read.
I don't know where else to complain about this so here we are.
Other than that, a good app.
Cheers.

There is nothing wrong with the content. The Atlantic is insightful, interesting and very up to date. However the app itself is somewhat clumsy and sluggish in its design. I suspect less than adequate coding may be to blame.

Version 2.2
The content from the Atlantic is great, once you subscribe you can download back issues, which is fantastic.
The problem is the app. When compared to other magazines, such as National Geographic, The New Yorker, or even the Qantas magazine the app leaves so much to be desired. The magazines are scanned pages of the print edition, with a 'reading' view which looses most the character. Similar to how kindle magazines work. Not great on the iPad. Wile it does support rotation, its not well implemented. Also uses low res icons and graphics, which could be updated for the iPad 3.
So overall good content, but the app needs a major update.

This used to be my favorite app. Beautiful design, of course great writing, and then they asked me to update it, only to be rewarded by incredibly annoying, constantly moving ads at the bottom that can' t removed. Tried covering it with my finger whilst I read, but the slightest pressure from my 'shield' either opened the ad or lost the story.
Pointless with the bright colored moving ads but great otherwise.

Good magazine, poor app

Version 1.0
The Atlantic is a good magazine. The Atlantic app is a bad app. It does not save the readers place through exits or task-switching, it has a jerky interface and it has no access to the free online content.
For a magazine that is aiming to survive in the digital age, the Atlantic's app has many obvious problems. The biggest advantage is that the app and the magazines are cheap, so you won't spend to much before you find the problems.
There is no easy access to the online content, and I have no idea how they could have forgotten to include it.
The app does not handle exits and multitasking well. Instead it puts you back on the starting screen, and sits unusable while it checks for updates. All the other readers and magazines and papers that I own manage to handle task switches.
The interface is broken as well. There is no clear, easily accessed index for the magazine. Instead they have thumbnails of the pages, which is only useful for finding something which you have been to before, so I guess it's good for when you need to go back to the article you were previously reading again, because you switched apps, and are now at the start of the magazine.
Poor effort, one star.
