Nothing works but the ads
My wife and I have had the digital Herald Sun since it started when it was $5 a month which was great. Now the cost is $32 and the spellcheck and grammar have gone out the window, the comments only work about 5% of the time on the iPad, ads started appearing in between the paragraphs, now if you want to watch a video, you have to watch an annoying ad. I’m sick of stories that at times become daily about Megan & Harry as well as people I’ve never heard of.
We are paying for this app so we DO NOT WANT ADS!!

What annoys me
When I go to the home section to look what the main stories are I find that mostly the headline stories and the majority of the other stories are all about sports. There is already a sports section for those interested so why not use the home section for current news stories as I would assume it would be.

Bug fix not likely
The black screen has become worse than before. The latest update says bug fixes. Well the black screen is a major bug that you DIDN’T fix. Such a shame that a once highly regarded newspaper could let it’s readers down. I worked at The Herald & Weekly Times 40yr ago, when news was quality. When staff were shown respect and looked after. When you valued your readers. This online rubbish is just that…rubbish.

Please fix
Current version is fine for reading the headlines and checking up on the events of the day.
There are a few bugs and issues however.
The most annoying one of all is the “scrolling” the images and text seem to lag really badly making the experience difficult on the eyes and takes longer to scroll through the content.
The other is the random “ad” placements which depending on which one loads or appears can work fine OR ends up extending beyond the field it is in and covering up the content either side - understand a need for ads but when it overlaps on the content it does make the app really difficult to use as it ends up launching the links embedded inside the ad rather than scrolling or loading the news content.
These ads also seem to overtake the majority of the screen on the phone which again makes it harder to get to the news content.

TDS seems entrenched in breaking news. Every day there are anti Trump articles alleging a fresh Trump failing. Today (16/02/26) “ breaking news” is Constant Chaos - Trump administration imploding. What annoys me is there is never an opportunity to comment which I believe is weak. The articles are nearly always proven to be wrong. I would expect this bias from the Australian ABC or other far left outfit.

I rang the assistant line and was told to remove the app and upload the app again - yes it fixed the problem but the next day, a new paper and once again the same problem! Left Wing Mods
Subscription is meant to allow comments on articles and likes. You have to log out each time you open the app and then log back in again, to be able to comment. The moderators are unfair and biased. Whilst T&C’s state they have the last say, they heavily decline any non left favouring comment, even when they are straight up quoted proven facts or comments, whilst left wing comments are allowed even when personally offensive and targeting or known to be false facts etc. Wouldn’t recommend the app or news source to anyone.

Jus getting my weekly exercise by deleting app and reinstalling in the vain hope it might restore the ability to download the the updates instead of something saying sorry we can’t do that now, retry with this arrow which doesn’t work paper. Articles not downloading/too often HS defaults to a “Subscribe” page or “restore app subscription
Liked the Herald Sun. Until. Now. What to do when clicking on most articles the HS defaults to a page asking to subscribe directly via the HS or “restore your subscription” occurs? Continually? Fully paid up Herald Sun App via iPhone IOS does not restore. “Retry” continually suggested. Nothing like this with many other continually used newspaper Apps, no restrictions on reading any articles. Making HS virtually unusable. Disappointing. Is it a bug? Or?

The new puzzle page disaster
The new puzzle page which has just been launched is. a total disaster. The new Cryptic Crossword puzzle setter expects everyone to have the IQ of Einstein. It is now simply impossible to use and a waste of time. Some of the solutions make absolutely no sense at all. On Sunday there is now no Cryptic Crossword in the puzzle page. Please restore the old Cryptic Crossword setter and bring back the Cryptic Crossword in the puzzle pages on Sunday.

I have been using this app for years and it has deteriorated badly in recent times. Syndicated click bait from realestate.CoM and other sites has clogged up the app with so much fluff that it bears little resemblance to the “Dead tree” version of the Herald Sun. All I want is a convenient, sustainable version of my daily paper. BTW, I am still angry over the axing of the comics section. Bring them back PLEASE.

I click on HS app to get news updates and often the first item and 4 of the first five are about useless internal AFL gossip items. News first, then sport please. Or put sport under its own heading for those obsessed with it.

Nothing seems to work as it should with this app, like no other. Even the contact form doesn’t work!
I’ve never come across a main stream app that does it so badly. Every time I click on an email link to an article I’m offered a subscription and can’t get to the article or even reinstate the subscription. So bad!

What more can I add that is not already written in all the other reviews! Not worthy of any ratings. Yet again I cannot download this paper, tried reloading etc etc etc. Refunds for all the times this app has failed to work as we are not being provided with the service that is supposed to be offered!

Censoring all the time
If you attempt to comment against the narrative that the Herald Sun is trying to create your comment is blocked. I don’t know why they do this but it is very annoying and allows disinformation to be spread if it suits their narrative. I also can’t seem to get rid of the the stream of football stories despite having them deselected in the menu.

Who would have approved the latest update to removed the navigation bar at the bottom of screen.
To get to games/ crosswords etc, one has to scroll to the bottom of the paper to access.
As an aside, it intrigues me that using an iPad, the display of games - shark quiz, sudoku, cryptic, and quick - cannot be displayed on one screen view.

Top and Bottom cut off
A rating of 1.7 stars says it all and has been like this for years. I don’t want those options on the top and bottom of the paper when I’m reading it. I should be able to hide or even remove them, they take up too much realestate for something I don’t use. The option to hide alternates after every update and is so annoying!

Bugs need fixing
You can’t use the navigation bar to scroll through to the back or middle of the paper. The bar closes before you can select the page you want to read. Also I’m not sure why the download button can’t be bigger, sometimes it can take many goes to hit the button. When you combine this with the increasingly negative style of journalism it makes for a very poor experience.

I only subscribe to this “news” paper for mind games and sport. Otherwise it’s a lightweight.
I use the “View all pages” bar at the bottom of the screen to get to pages quickly. However, when I get to the page I want, the page navigation bar disappears making it impossible to select that page! So frustrating!

They try and steal your money
I signed up for a deal ($1 for 4 weeks, then $32 every 4 weeks after that). They tried to debit $32 from my account a week early (after only 3 weeks of my trial), but luckily I didn’t have any money in my account. I called up (as that’s the only way you can cancel) and after being on hold for the best part of 30 mins, I copped some spud who tried to talk me into keeping my subscription for longer. He proceeded to confirm that I had a 4 week extension to the 16th February, and that another debit attempt wouldn’t happen until that week. Sure enough, my account wasn’t updated, and the Herald Sun tried to take the $32 from me again only days later (unsuccessful once again). It’s now going to try again in 2 days time. What a pathetic joke of an organisation

Way too glitchy
This app would be fine if it actually worked. Has gone downhill over the years, and significantly worse with iOS 18.
- Frequently fails to load pages (even when they’re visible in preview/ thumbnails)
- Says no internet connection even when internet is fine
- If you try to download the edition for offline reading, the button has to be pressed over 20 times because it either opens the newspaper or does nothing instead
- When scrolling through the thumbnails, they disappear the second you take your finger off the screen, therefore literally impossible to skip to future pages
- The current day’s paper often doesn’t load at all
Please fix urgently!!! These errors make the paper unreadable frequently, and a waste of money. Considering cancelling my subscription out of frustration.

Why change a function that worked well for one that is hopeless
The crossword text is so small it can hardly be read. The clue function on the crossword does not keep the clue visible when changing words Sudoku undo function and operation is terrible with text size jumping into a size that is so large it’s unreadable on an iPad. The check function has to be searched for rather than being visible all the time

Can’t see Top Stories
Since the last update, I have been unable to view Top Stories on the app on iPad or iPhone!
I receive a notification but when I click on it, it says unable to load stories.

Is it too much to ask for today’s paper to be available? I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to access the current days paper just to still be looking at yesterday. I’ve read that one, again after multiple attempts at getting it. If I hadn’t paid for a twelve month subscription I’d be cancelling it today.

Locks on page
This still happens about every 2 months when I first open the app. There is no arrow to return to beginning. It opens on racing and sticks there. Have to delete and download the app again.
This app is extremely poor. Almost monthly it freezes on a page, often racing. All options to move forward or back are missing. Only solution is to delete the app and reinstall. Ridiculous as this has been going on for a couple of years. This is still happening. So frustrating

How much longer are we going to put up with the screen changing to the copyable version of the text, merely by clicking on the screen? Why is this version not got to via a button at the top of the screen? Tired of having to put up with this around a dozen times each day. Please amend the method of getting to the text screen.

Crossword
Since my iPad updated the crossword clues have been overlaid on the grid so you are unable to actually complete it. I have sort help but none is available. Will probably now cancel my subscription as this was the only thing I actually wanted from this paper as the news is usually several days old..

Complete frustration!
Have been a subscriber to online HS for several years and loved it.
Something has changed in the app so when you open the HS app it cuts off any audio app you are using.
Why have you done this?
It just means I don’t read the paper if there is something else I’m doing. Seriously considering cancelling my subscription

Not able to unsave articles
Since the last update I can no longer unsave articles. Frustrating. Up till now I have been enjoying the app

HS App overrides music radio app
Once you open the HS app it shuts down any music app you were listening too. Very frustrating

Not good
A few issues with the app.
You can download newspaper, but if you don’t use the app for about 20 mins, it will need to reopen, which you need the internet for. So you can’t read the downloaded paper without internet.
And I like to listen to radio on my phone whilst reading. But reading the newspaper for some reason doesn’t allow outside audio to play at the same time.
Not sure this is an app issue, but about 2 newspapers a day has the menu option of the “wrap” which takes you to the back page, or the first page of the sports section. All other days it has the “sports” menu option, which technically takes you to the wrong end of the sports section.

Comments don’t load
The App has not been loading user comments for months now (it used to work fine) but there has been no update to fix the issue. Very annoying and I wish they’d sort it out

Heaps of room to improve
Could we please have newsworthy articles - tell your journos to put a bit of effort into chasing NEWS - no more useless, space wasting stories about our so called influencers and would be if the could be’s Enough is enough - looking at cancelling my subscription - it’s not all that good value for money any more

Room for improvement
Been using for several years now and has improved over time. There is a bug where once you’ve bookmarked an article, if it can’t be found you can’t see anything else you’ve bookmarked. Its most frustrating and requires deletion of the app and reinstall to reinstate, but the the same thing can (and will) happen again.

Crashes ALL the time
For a companies who’s future is digital, they have a terrible app.
Im a paid up subscriber and I have to regularly login back in, it won’t remember my details. I have 50 plus apps on my IPhone 14 and this app crashes more than any other app and it crashes daily.
It needs a totally new app written by a totaly new company because the guys that wrote the current app are hopeless.

My subscription doesn’t recognise my app

I have tried many times to receive news from the Herald Sun app and it keeps on telling me to subscribe when I go to read a story. I changed my email address a while ago so this might be one of the reasons it’s not working. It’s getting very annoying
