Complete Rubbish. Save your Money

I have been playing this app now for a number of years now and play it everyday. The developer says the numbers generated by the rolling of the dice are random. With respect, I do not agree. The computer will hit the human single checker (blot), far more times than the other way around. Re-entering the game via an open point often takes 6, 7 or even more rolls of the dice. This is just outright cheating and bares no resembles to a real game. Incidentally, this was confirmed by by looking at the statistics. When the computer is trying to re-enter the game via an empty point, it requires at most 1 or 2 rolls. Again cheating. This becomes really frustrating and takes all the enjoyment out of the game. It also illustrates how the computer is manipulating the game play. The computer simply cheats. One is always aware, it is a computer, not a human playing. The game is either too damn easy, or impossibly hard; nothing in between. The dice rolls are often rubbish. It is just too damn artificial and makes a mockery of random dice rolls. Save your money and look elsewhere if you are looking for a good game of backgammon, because you will not find it here.

good but sort of cheats

the dev contacted me, i have already read his proofs - which he always defers to instead of answering the actual question you ask.

i have seen amazing rolls in my life. i have yet to see a player open with one and two and make the same obvious move anyone would across 100s of games - and then change that move only once when they magically knew their next roll would suit the varied opening play they chose.

i have yet to play a game with a human in 40yrs, where i know what their next roll is before it happens. not just once but 100s of times accurately. because it is so obvious.

the developer is full of it - and i could maybe believe him, except when i roll manual dice the computer loses its magical future knowledge of the rolls.

i call the developer out as a liar and i am happy to be proved otherwise in only one way - if the developer is willing to explain the type of neural network model implemented, if/how it learns over time as you play, if it is networked and what biases and data points it is using.

one of the potential problems is that the computer and player dice are generated by the same random seed. that is a false simulation.

if the neural network is assessing dice sequences and is as i am, able to detect the bleedingly obvious and non random order of rolls, then it has a serious advantage because it is able to adjust to the biases over vast sets of data better than a human

this may not be a bad thing, this may make for an incredible AI. The developer in this case needs to explain the AI instead of just saying “look at the roll generator”. Any IT fool knows computers do not generate true random and matched to neural network - the AI will easily be able to determine what is coming up from either set of dice - because of the same not truly random sequence.

the developer claims the AI does not cheat and i agree. The dice rolls are the problem and it is hard to explain - however after 500 games against expert with a 30% win rate - all i can say is either computers are sentient and influence rolls in their favour or the dev is running a pre scan over the rolls to select “hard games to win”.

the setups that happen are beyond belief.

it is a total piss take. i can literally pre guess what the computer is going to roll next, it is that obvious of a setup. I am often laughing at how obvious it is.

sure the AI is damn good. which is great.

i have now been playing it with manual rolled dice and no cheating. yeah it beats me and i beat it and that is fine - it is a good opponent and the way it plays is still really good - surprise surprise though the totally obvious eye roll worthy setups have quite simply stopped and the computer can’t make use of them. nawww.

unfortunately the game does not isolate manual rolls in stats otherwise i would happily play another 500 games manually rolled and compare to prove it.

so be careful playing on expert, it damages your game because to win you learn to make stupid moves to break the blatantly obvious setup you are in.

such moves will not work with a human unless they too have carefully pre selected a dice sequence where you have little chance of winning because every roll is a setup with the exact roll required to stomp you coming next.

very cleverly designed, not clever enough to conceal the truth.

and yes i enjoy when i lose fairly to this AI.

Not Again

Excellent app with a lot of options for learning & gaining insight into ones game. However, I’m still not convinced that the dice generator is truly random; as the A.I seems to have an uncanny way of rolling doubles at a rate of about 3:1 & similarly getting numbers that get it out of trouble a little all too easily. I checked this by using an external number generator & manually feeding in the data & ‘surprise, surprise’; my ‘wins’ significantly increased. I still play it with the odds against me as both a training tool for dealing with a ‘Flakey/lucky’ opponent &/or when I just need a dose of frustration & humility. - Dellazorro

Good, but serious issues.

Fully featured. For serious players. I have a few gripes which I hope can be addressed.

Current version is very unstable. Crashes randomly.

When playing online, it takes too long to detect terminations. Sometimes keeps you waiting a minute or more. I should be able to abort in this period without it counting against me. Part of the problem if the way the app shows all the stats while the opponent is waiting for a rematch. Wait till we're done to show them!

I can't find any way to view my own abort % in the app. I have to ask people. I think I can only see my ELO after a game.

There should be the option to use the Jacoby rule in match play. Someone who hasn't doubled doesn't deserve two points.

It would be good if you could finish, or auto finish, games after you or the computer resigns.

The hint on accept/resign says accept too often.

I rate this game as an online version, however the AI is painful. It’s either too easy or on hard the dice are just plain rigged. You may win occasionally but the computer rolls exactly what it needs at key points in the game and makes it very frustrating to play. Disappointing game

Totally addictive

I absolutely love this app. I find it incredibly user friendly and really can't fault it at all. I just wish that more people used it, as I sometimes find myself waiting long periods of time waiting for 'real' players. Oddly enough, I get beaten by the 'real' players far more than I do by the computer. Even when set to 'expert'. For backgammon nuts, this app is gold.

Honest Cheating (if there is such a thing)

This app is probably the best backgammon app in the store. It allows the user to use manual dice and enter the scores to drive game play. This function ensures that the computer cannot be accused if cheating. In expert mode with manual dice rolls I win about 85% if the time. However, when using the game with automatic dice roll and in expert mode the game is very difficult to beat maybe I win 25% of the time. I suspect that while there may be no intentional cheating the neural net which drives the AI's play has been over-fitted to the dice roll algorithm and is thus able to anticipate likely dice roll outcomes.

Additional information 2 years later:

I have now passed 500,000 dice rolls and wanted to add to my previous comments.

This game definitely has a deliberate skew in favor of the AI when in expert mode and automatic dice roll. The statistics provide data assuring the user that no cheating is occurring since the percentage of rolls, scores and frequencies matches what would be expected with "perfect" dice. While this may be true it obfuscates the fact that the AI gets double 6 or indeed any other score when it is most useful for it my game play invariably gets the score least useful at a given play. This is particularly the case when attempting to get back in off the bar. Most (70%) of my double sixes occur when I am in the bar and the only unavailable position is 6! Just this last game trying to move a piece where a six was required I threw 22 times without throwing a six. I have played games where I have moved once and the AI has played on to a winning position without my making a single other move.

I have played backgammon for 40 years at all levels including regularly beating a player who matched Omar Sharrif for skills and I have never seen dice fall as they fall for this AI.

This AI behavior may improve your game if you are willing to be VERY frustrated but it is not a true reflection of real world game play and should not be touted as such.

In the interests of fairness I would suggest that the game be modified to allow a move to be withdrawn after it has been played so that game becomes a true learning experience. This would allow a poor move to be remade in light of the AI's dice roll.

I have used this app for about 4 years. At the expert level it is brilliant. If you become humble and stop regarding all your wins as due to skill and your losses caused by rigged dice you can learn a lot and really improve your game. A great app worth every cent.

Does not cheat

This app does not cheat but if you feel (incorrectly) it does you have the option of rolling your own real world dice and entering the results. Try it. I did and initially still lost badly. By watching what moves the app made I have improved my game to the point where I can now beat it 50% of the time.

I've been playing on this particular app for years now, and while this game has the best user interface and makes for an absorbing, if not slightly perverse, mathematical challenge, it comes with the frustration of knowing that in expert mode, 'luck' favours the computer.

Lots of features but dodgy algorithms

A full featured backgammon game with lots of controls and options. The hint feature can be useful to learn more and progress but my main complaint is that this game definitely 'cheats' (I know, the makers go to great lengths to point out that the dice rolls a preprogrammed and don't change in response to the game circumstances, but... I can still manage to get around 50% of wins in expert mode but only after I worked out that the game is programmed so that if you get pinged you will virtually never be able to roll dice numbers that gets you off the bar...so it favours pinging your opponent even if you leave yourself exposed as he will take numerous moves to get off the bar enabling you plenty of time to cover your exposed pieces or block him in further. After playing backgammon regularly for over 40 years against all sorts of opponents both human and computer I can tell you 'Real world' backgammon isn't like this so while this game is a fun and interesting challenge it isn't like playing the real game.

Inconsistent

This is the best of a bad bunch of BG apps but it is very annoying. I know the developers deny it but it is definitely not related to real life. Every time you leave a man unguarded the computer hits it and I have counted up to at least ten tries to get back in. When computer loses a man nearly every time it gets back in on the only space available within a couple of throws. When bearing off I have seen five doubles in a row for the computer but rarely any for me!

This needs work from programmers.

I get so frustrated I regularly uninstall it for months at a time until the memory fades.

Love this software but something broke recently

Have been using this and enjoying for months. Feature packed. User friendly. Great software. But something has broken with 9.02 and Game Center. Now when I invite my long time BG partner for a rematch I get paired with some random person. I can't successfully invite my friend. It looks like I have but then a new game starts with some random. Great teacher, fun opponent.

I kill a lot of time with this app. For fun and for improving my game. It's standard of play is well above that of most players so many of us can benefit from its hints whilst playing. Since using it my FIBS rating has improved quite a lot as it has taught me to be less conservative. For those of you who really want to complain about the dice not being random. Allow me to say this...... You're wrong! Simply that. Do some research and reading on computer dice and you'll come to see that all your suspicions are not based in fact.

Strong AI

I play a lot of backgammon, club wise and online. Although I don't use this app to play online, it has a very strong program and is hard to beat. The tutor modes are very instructive, and generally gets it right. The dice are genuinely random- ignore any comments to the contrary. I have tried every other backgammon app I could find, and none came anywhere close to this one- in intelligence and ease of use.

Not cool

Too often opponents quit in the middle of a match or you are left waiting while they effectively stop playing during a match (although sometimes they might have lost internet connection). The last 5 or 6 matches I played I was not able to finish the matches due to opponents quitting before the match had ended. Highly annoying! How it cheats!

Not by controlling the dice, but by knowing the future dice rolls. So play by the "ai" is often strange. The way to best it is to use the option to throw the dice yourself and enter the rolls. Then it's play isn't near as strong. Still, fun to play otherwise.

Great game

Very advanced, as proved by the regular ridiculous claims that the dice are fixed.

Playing using the tutor mode in advanced setting is a great way of improving your game. I make my move before clicking the hint button, but revert to my original move afterwards.

My win percentage on a 5 point match is around 35, and I don't think I'm a bad player.

More fun to play real people online though - not least cos I win more than 1 in 3 matches.

Good feature is showing the abort and completion rate of the player you're about to play. Means you can block the ( presumably) children who don't complete matches that they're losing.

Fix the computer player

The computer player is a cheat. It will put you on the bar and not let you off by denying you what you need for 30 rolls. On the other hand it will always get on in one or two. It will give you doubles when you can't use them, but when it rolls them it almost always needs them to put itself in a winning position. The error rate count is also very subjective. I was up more than 50 points against the computer and it told me I had an error rate of 30 per cent

Worth it

Nothing worse than an app designed to throw it'self good dice, and toss you the rubbish. This app is backgammon redemption, straight dice - and if you don't believe that, throw your own and enjoy. Recommended !

Great app but makes me feel unlucky

I love this app, great interface. Everyone says that the app doesn't cheat, so I realise that I am the unluckiest man alive. This app has so much good luck playing against me that I have started to think that god is punishing me.

I think it will make me a better player though.

The best, accept no other

Easily the best coded backgammon game around, even the bets players in the world find this game tough on the highest difficulty...and no, it doesn't "cheat", it just makes the best possible move with every roll which sets it up for future rolls...play only this game if you want to learn to be a better player and have a real challenge

Good game

I'm no expert at this game but it's challenging. Does seem to start with that the odds are stacked against you but on learning tactics and practicing I have got better and can now beat it more often. Only thing I found was that if I resign in a position where the double gammon score would apply at that point, the computer gets the double score but if the computer resigns in a similar position, no double score is given....just the current dice score.

Too Good. New iPad Retina update PLEASE!!

Got beaten by one sole checker!!! No mercy this AI fights to the death! You have to be at the top of your game to have any chance of winning and then some! You are asked to raise your standards and I have found my gameplay improve greatly and my tactics much more thoughtful.

OK, but as others have observed...

It cheats. It's not even subtle. After a dozen matches even the simplistic statistics built into the game show 20% better rolls. If you don't expect a fair game then it's fine for a half hour. I measure my performance by how often it rolls the 5-3 or whatever it needs to pick off two blots, followed by some nice doubles to build a sudden 5 or 6 point break.

OK, but computer definitely cheats

Yes, it has 100 rolls ahead, but remember it knows what's coming up and you don't! If you set it for high difficulty, though, expect it to let you win fewer times. Not great, just OK.

Finally, a really good BG program !

Expensive, but worth the money. Does't make dum mistakes like in some cheapies. After playing it a while, i'm forced to admit it is better than me. Also I'm satisfied with the authors proof that it doesn't cheat. I also like it's skill in the bearing off part of the game. Many programs let down in that area.

Recommended.

Backgammon HD

Great game ideal for any skill level. AI is well above any backgammon software I have seen including gnbug. Computer does get flukey roles but this app is about learning how to be a much better player not beating a computer. Just set the skill level to expert and you watch your ELO rating soar as you develop your skills over time.

Unrealistic

In expert mode the dice always result in the perfect roll for the computer. If I knock out a piece it always returns the correct dice to get back in the game. Even with one column open it always returns that number and double if the computer has 2 pieces out. When my piece was out and there was 4 columns open I went 10 rolls without getting back in until the computer had closed off all possibilities. Expert mode does not mean better AI logic just perfect rolls for the computer.
