Description

Perfect OCR gives you both an accurate general purpose OCR app and a quality document scanner. Now you can scan and OCR your letter-size or A4 documents with an accuracy of 90% or more, edit, copy and store the recognized text, and e-mail your documents as PDF files with text, SINGLE page image, or both together!
NOTE: To ensure the advertised results it is important that you follow the OCR TIPS below (or in the app's help).
"It worked great for me! I translated a whole story in spanish using the espanol language preference and then I copied and pasted it into a translator to get the whole story in English!"
"This app is really very good and I find it to be very accurate!"
>> Perfect OCR users.
Perfect OCR scans your documents using advanced image-processing algorithms to eliminate uneven lighting and shadows and improve contrast. The result is the clearest and most readable scans possible from the iPhone's camera. Perfect OCR also offers SureScan, our proprietary scanning mode that delivers sharper images with less jitter or smear.
Our unique "Email to myself" feature lets you send documents to a predefined address, or even upload them to an online storage service like Evernote or Box.net, with a single tap. Uploading documents to online services via email is fast, secure, and can be done even if you're temporarily off line. Refer to app help for details.
All processing happens on your iPhone, and the confidentiality of your data is never compromised. There is also no subscription fee, and no Internet access is needed to scan documents or run OCR.

• Letter-size or A4 page OCR with accuracy of 95% for model 3GS, 98% for iPhone 4, and up to 90% for 3G

Brilliant update after 6 years

What great news that you have updated this neat little app. As I got warnings that it was out of date each time I used it. Today there is an update to 64 bit. I checked on version history. Last update 2011. Let's hope done other older app developers take your tip too

A mighty mini app!

Bought it last night, used it immediately, excellent results, easy to use, a minimum of fuss. I wish I’d had it when I was copying all those journal articles in the library at uni!
Old-timer too

A solid ocr app. No stupid online ocr conversion required

A very good ocr app. The app makers need to update the look of the app (has not changed in years) and create an ipad version - new iPads have a much improved camera and can not take good enough images for ocr.

Works on screen shots of text in iPad

I often like to capture a text quote from an ebook I'm reading on my iPad. I do this through native iPad screen shot & it is put in as an image into native iPad photos. This App seems successful at translating these captures back into text- just what I was after. For an OCR its recognition success rate was pretty good too.

Good, easy to use scanning

I haven't really tested the OCR function, but for keeping a jpg copy of hand filled in forms I have found it excellent.

Appears good

First impressions good. A pity I bought TurboScan first. Thought they may have promoted ocr version as an upgrade instead of full price? But not a sheep station so doesn't matter.

Not worth it

It could not recognize large text, a free amateur style app is better,if I could I would get my money back

Far from perfect

Too painful to use. Too slow. Inaccurate.

Not perfect like its name suggests!

It would be quicker to use dragon dictation and just dictate the document rather than take three shots, error correct etc.

surprisingly accurate!!!

I have always been skeptical of ocr programs, especially on a phone camera, i never expect it to be of any real use because of the inaccuracies, but i saw the lite version of this app, and i thought, lets just try it. I tried it using the "surescan" option on a slightly smaller than A4 page, maybe 75% the size of an A4 page with maybe size 12 font, it was a full page of text, and took about 35 seconds to extract the texts from the page, but the results was stunning. I was surprised, it made ONE error (rn was picked up as m). I was holding the 3Gs with one hand, holding a white LED torchlight with the other hand, and with my hand possibly shaking a bit, i took the three photos required, and after adjusting the borders and colours, the outcome had an amazing ONE error...
i have to say, its not too expansive, but not that many features too, a simple ocr software, but boy, the results speak for itself! I just wonder how much better the iphone 4 camera would be! it has given me new found respect for the iphone camera and for ocr software on the iphone. I'm using 3Gs with iOS4.1.
update: i tested it AGAIN to make sure i wasn't fluking it, again tested with one hand holding phone, one had holding torch, it was a full page of maybe point 12 text, the page was about 75% of an A4, this time there were about 3 or 4 mistakes, two of them were where m was picked up instead of rn, and another one where about two letters were wrong, but i have to admit, despite these mistakes, i'm getting about 3 mistakes PER PAGE, that's very very impressive... feels almost too accurate to be true... I also scanned two business cards, it made a few errors, but the fonts were much smaller and tighter together. Comparing this with the "worldcard" business card ocr scanner, scanning the same business card, the worldcard application performed very marginally better in terms of accuracy, but these are two seperate applications for different uses, you can't substitute one with another.
2nd update: i took a photo of a game manual with **GREY BACKGROUND**, and uploaded the photo to google docs and used their ocr to extract the text, and i also used perfect ocr, here are the comparisons (identical photos used)

surprising, as you can see above, google ocr actually trancated about 40% of the text, and the parts that it recognised were very inaccurate, perfect ocr did much much better. and NO, i don't work for perfect ocr, and i have nothing against google :-)

It works and is very easy to use

Just remember to get the orientation right (rotate pic if necessary)!
It's extremely easy to use and works astonishingly well. I took an A4 page of 12pt type indoors, handheld, on an overcast day; the only bit it didn't get virtually perfectly was a warped line at the top. The jpg picture (one-click emailed) showed that the exposure was underdone (the text was clouded with a grey background) but still it got turned into ascii text!
Worthwhile using the perspective-correcting frame-adjustments.
The 3-pic system is excellent.

Does not work

I got the iPhone 4 and this app runs ok but the recognition is pathetic it will get a few words right and that's taking a good photo... Most the OCR output is individual letters and symbols, this app is a rip off and has not been tested properly.

Captain Redbeard

I was worried about buying this, given the mixed reviews (for this and for all the other OCR apps in the store) but I must say I'm impressed with how well it works, with my iPhone 3GS. I've been scanning in pages of a (70 year old, somewhat yellowed) book and the accuracy has been well over 95%, using the surescan 3x mode. On average I have to fix only one or two words per page manually. And this is with pictures taken with not particularly bright artificial light.

Crashes under IOS4

Worked quite well until I upgraded to IOS4, now it crashes after pressing the use button. Needs an update to make it compatible.

Bad

Don't buy if you have a 3G it's terrible. I tried a simple page and it turned all the words into wierd characters (/;-&$,!") and there was only one half correct word on the whole page total waste of $6 and that's on discount don't buy :( I hate it buy something slightly better LIKE A REAL OR GOOD SCANNER!!!!!!!

Absolutely super! OCR and a scanner

Purchased 3 OCR apps and several scanner apps
*- smartscanner 5.99, good
*- perfectscan 4.99, great
C- docscanner 7.99, a CON. Don't buy
Scanner apps, NO OCR (ripping of text)
- document scanner 5.99, best for multi page as can resequence, enhance image
- scan2pdf 8.99
- jotscanner
Both OCR apps* accuracy is good, both great if picture HALF book (A5 size). Both good accuracy if scan a full page of your A5 book.
OCR apps are HEAPS HEAPS BETTER for scan and rip TEXT than the 4 scanning apps.
Comparison of OCR apps
• Smartscan 5.99 is quicker and about same readability as perfect scan you need to take 3 pictures, fiddle with the border. Smartscan you take 1 picture and then see very cool visual of it scanning your picture
• Perfect scan 4.99 easier to edit as 1 tap and can edit entire text v smartscan is touches (eg you click edit, edit, click done to see it). So with smartscan you copy to clipboard and paste in notes app
• Perfect scan as many more output options - camera roll, jpeg, PDF, text etc..
• Perfect scan does multi PDF (very easy) but doesn't save the multiple images to camera roll or all pages of text. You need to save to camera roll and text 1 at a time.
• perfect scan can change page orientation. Smartscanner u cannot.
None of the apps allow you to take say 10 pictures, then ask the app to scan OCR and get text for those 10 pages.
I have 32gb 3gs and perfectscan does give me low memory error. I just ok message and continue. Everything works well
Would like to see an update soon, in order of criticality
- adjust frame (ocr border) is VERY diddly and most cumbersome step. Pls improve
- auto btn to change scanning border to entire screen with 1 btn
- ability to scan multiple pages, then OCR these pages.
- ability to save all of the multiple images and TEXT that make up the multiple PDF
- ability to have same accuracy for a5 page as two halves. If I could scan an a5 page then I can get my PDF version and text version in one step.
- ability to reorder images

Ok

Have a 32gb 3gs and it keeps telling me I have low memory, the first test shot worked but you can not take a picture of a A4 page it needs to be a smaller section

10% accuracy

Tried it with some very clean printed text.. no images, no frames or columns...
(i) doesn't work in Landscape mode.
(ii) Scan from Camera ~ 5% accurate (if that)
(iii) Scan from SureScan ~ 80%
Good but not great.

Waste of money, in fact send my money back!

The application does not work on a 3G. It claims to be 90% accurate. I tried various sized fonts, various lighting and still it's not even 1% accurate. I wanted to contact someone about it before writing a negative review, but there is no support link to ask.
If the developers have any ethics at all they will return my money and let people know that it does not work on 3G phones.

This is good enough!

I purchased this with a little bit of doubt because heres no review on this app. But this really works with fairly understandable misses ( eg. performance -> perfonnance) ! I really like this. I use this app to OCR lecture slides. If you are not a jerk who exists only for toilet work, grab this. Its even cheaper than other doc scanning apps!
