Description
Shredder, the most successful chess program ever, is now also available for the iPhone. You can play against Shredder, analyze with him and solve chess puzzles. It offers the usual Shredder standard for your pocket.
In addition to the outstanding playing strength of the 12 times computer chess world champion, Shredder is also able to mimic the play of a human chess player with any playing strength. He even deliberately makes typical human mistakes in those levels.
Solve 1000 built in chess puzzles. Shredder keeps track of your performance and offers advice if needed.
You can adjust Shredder’s playing strength from beginner to master level. If you like, Shredder automatically adjusts his strength to yours. He even calculates an Elo rating for you. This is how the playing strength of chess players is typically measured.

Overall a near perfect app. There’s only a couple of small things I’d love to see in this to make it perfect (for me anyway):
- An import game from snapshots function
- Removal of the “too many promoted pieces” limit when making a custom game. (Currently @ 14 per side, would like 16 a side)
- Being able to place pawns on the 1st rank for puzzle purposes
I like to be able to make up my own puzzles using this app and the limit is a bit of a hindrance but otherwise a great app.

Charge you again for iPad
Good chess program, but finally got myself an iPad. Every app I own works well with the iPad except Shredder - you have to pay again for the iPad version. 1 star for this reason.

My go-to Chess app
Nothing to complain about really. With decent play and puzzles this is a great offline chess app. If I could change one thing it would be to use standard algebraic notation.

Shredder
Excellent chess program for club players and also beginners. Good for games analysing. I use it on my iPad and iPhone

Pretty much excellent
Auto adjustment of the skill level soon finds your measure, allowing you to see your improvement on a graph over time. Great look and feel and sound effect. Technical support is excellent.
Game analysis includes giving you an indication of the strength of your current position, hints for your next move and letting you know when you make a bad move (optional).
Shredder caters for everyone from the beginner to grand master. It even makes common human mistakes on the beginner and intermediate levels. Apart from the multi player chess apps, I hone my skills with Shredder!

Just purchased the full version and it crashes a lot. I hope they regularly fix bugs as I am running on the latest software with the iPhone 6+.

Best on show
There are plenty of chess apps, and paying for another one probably isn't desirable. However Shredder is worth the asking price: it plays a very mean game yet at lower levels makes consistent moves. In other words the program's blunders are relatively subtle, like a human player, which is hard to find in computer chess. For PGN importing and maintaing database/s, consider tChess Pro as well. Shredder does analyse and grants PGN exporting for third party analysis.

Coach is not too flash. Tells me I have made a poor move when I am two moves away from winning the game.

Friendly and Quick
The interface is excellent and easy to use, response is quick. Good enough to setup position and do analysis. The drawback is no PGN import. The chess engine is only up to 2600, not able to solve some endgame puzzles. I have to turn to Fritz for solution.

Good but no 3D view
Shredder is a good chess engine that manages to simulate real players better than other programs like Chessmaster. However, it does have its flaws. Unlike other chess games it makes you pay again for the iPad version, even though it is exactly the same as the iPhone one, including crucially no 3D. I recommend that unless you're a beginner you turn off the meter that indicates which side is winning as it is frequently inaccurate. Also, Shredder will sometimes say, 'I don't think your last move was very good. Would you like to take it back?' typically after I've sacrificed a piece to gain position and then defeat it on the highest level, so only take notice if you're a beginner. The biggest flaw however is the lack of true 3D.

The best chess app for iPhone. Excellent adjustability for strength and play style, puzzles, coaching, a pleasure to use and the kind of app you can see yourself using for years, not days or weeks. Some nice new additions to the choices of pieces in this update. Developers very helpful with bugfixes too.

Searched for reviews of chess apps all over the net - Shredder & tChess seemed to emerge as the top 2 contenders. Tried Shredder Lite - Great! Then tChess Lite - very disappointed that I had to fork out money to test drive a LITE version of tChess - that's just wrong.
For those interested in 3D boards (I was, and that attracted me to tChess - Shredder doesn't have 3D), if you have an iPad, that's fine (the 3D worked well), but note that AN IPHONE SCREEN IS JUST TOO SMALL TO TRY AND DO CHESS IN 3D! This is the case, regardless of how good the programming might be. That said, tChess doesn't allow landscaped mode, which would increase the amount you can zoom the board before you start losing stuff off the screen.
Shredder is more feature rich, has a world class engine (12-time world champion), with real ELO ratings (while tChess' engine is untested in the professional arena, and therefore unrated).
When it comes to actually playing chess (on a 2D board that I can clearly see the whole of, thank you very much), the actual game play of tChess Lite was perfectly acceptable.
30 minutes after opening tChess Lite, I returned to Shredder Lite (man I wish lite versions were all free - that quick test-run cost me money!), and have since upgraded to the full version of Shredder. (I didn't upgrade for weeks - you would have to be quite a good player to be limited by the free version.) I did my homework, tested them out, and (3D aside), Shredder CLEARLY won.

I'm loving this app. Very full-featured. I especially like the way it adapts to your level of play and rates you - mind you the rating system is pretty generous when you consider it lets you take back moves in rated games! Strength-wise, any half decent chess engine should kill pretty much anyone except a master-level player, so it's a moot point for 99% of players. What's more interesting is the way it degrades it's play. I'm not quite convinced by Shredder's deliberate mistakes - it plays a strong game then drops some suicidal clanger. But it still makes for a fun, challenging game of chess, and
having such a powerful analysis tool in one's pocket is terrific. Get it. The position setup feature gives it a big edge over Fritz, much as Fritz is king on the PC.

The Chess app
Amazing speed and good gameplay. I was told that this is 'the' chess app, and thankfully at this price it appears to be correct. One of the few games I have found which can justifiably claim to be cheap on the basis of comparison to PC versions. It's a fair call.

Great little app
I've been using Shredder Classic 3 on my desktop for ages. This is a great little sub-set. Keeps me from going bonkers in the Doctor's waiting room or sitting waiting for a train! The graphics are impressive. Haven't found a way to reset a game to the start yet except by using the back button to retrace all the moves. I've only played a few games against it at a low level and I'm sure it won't be as strong a player as the desktop version (World's most powerful chess program for PC's) but plenty strong enough for casual entertainment.

Strongest & adjustable. Great board & I'face. 5 stars when:
(a) u can play unrated games (they currently all seem to count &sometimes u just want to muck around)
(b) u can play with clock
(c) u can play online @ chessgames
But this still the best chess game on itouch!
