NZeTA – Get it before you go
Download this free official New Zealand government app and use it to request your NZeTA and pay the IVL. The app is the fastest way to request an NZeTA and should take you less than 5 minutes.
You can use the app to scan your passport to upload your details and scan your credit or debit card for ease of payment.
You can request and pay for up to 10 NZeTAs in one transaction for your family or group.
What are the NZeTA & IVL?
The NZeTA is a border security measure introduced by the New Zealand Government on 1 October 2019.

When entering an email address, each keystroke results in duplicated characters.
Photos often require multiple attempts due to inconsistent color filters being applied.
The payment card scanning feature does not function properly
It’s unclear how much the New Zealand Tourism Board spent developing this app, but it must have been a significant amount—yet the performance is unacceptable.

I’ve never written an app review before, but after having this app steal $40 from me for a 50 minute layover in NZ I feel it is appropriate.
Make sure you do not make any mistakes on your application or else you will have to do another and pay multiple times. You are better off asking a staff member for help if you are unsure.

I don’t know what all the bad reviews are about. It’s easy to navigate and when I scanned a passport it immediately recognized it and that a valid visa was already in place. No need for emails or passwords, it’s a great app and very useful. Good job

Worst design app
Everything started smoothly but once you hit the “Australian permanent resident” page and clicked yes, there’s no “next” button to proceed to the next page, had to use the web to apply the ETA, and pay extra, and takes longer to get an approval. What a joke, it’s 2023!

Great app with an Incredibly quick process
The app was really easy to use, and I completed my entire application for my NZeTA within 5 minutes and it got approved 2 minutes after submitting. It scanned my passport accurately and it allows you to take a photo of yourself for the application as well. Interface of the app could be improved but it got the job done!

Horrible experience
Wouldn’t scan my passport, selected Yes to Permanent Resident but charged as non resident. Went back to re enter that info and had to start all over again. Grr
Fortunately my husband was applying on his phone too so that I didn’t have to add him as a traveller. I’ve since read other reviews saying that scenario is dire.
What a horrible experience and start to our journey.
Air New Zealand never mentioned the need for an eta if you are a permanent Resident but don’t hold an Australian or New Zealand passport. They should read your reviews.

Product manager asleep at the wheel! This app does not work for Australian permanent residents. Qantas’s work around it to instruct you to say that you are NOT a permanent resident… 🤦♂️

Horrible user experience
The app seems to be developed by students. I’ve spent way too much time trying to take a selfie aligning camera to satisfy the app. After scanning a card the keyboard doesn’t appear to enter the name.
I guess I should be thankful that app doesn’t crash in at the end of the flow losing all the data.

Hard to take photos

Got scammed to pay for an entertainment fee at 0400 am, have to lock the card and request a new one before travel, all because of this App.
Go to the website to apply, the discount in this App don’t deserve the risk you need to take!

Payment failing- unusable
I am unable to enter my name as appears on my card in this app as there is a field validation on surname field preventing using a hyphen (fail). payment fails on next step either because of that or a different issue.

Crashes and takes very long, website faster
While checking in for a transfer flight via Auckland the attendant told me that I need a NZeTA even if I never going to leave the transit zone and only will spend 2 hours in transit. They also told me that with the NZeTA-app it’s easy and will only take a few minutes. There will be enough time to get the NZeTA in order to be able to check in for my flight leaving in 3 hours.
So I downloaded the app and had no problem to scan my passport, but when I had to take a photo of myself the app crashed, again and again and again. Probably 15 minutes later after having restarted the app more than 20 times I eventually succeeded and could take the photo. Paid the fee and submitted the application. And then I waited ...
1 1/2 hours later and much closer to my scheduled flight it was still pending. A phonecall to immigration in Auckland didn’t help and the airline attendant didn’t want to check me in without a granted NZeTA.
I could already see my aeroplane leaving without me, when I read in these reviews that the website was much faster. So I tried the website, submitted the required information and paid again the fee.
Only 30 seconds later, the NZeTA was granted. It took a big load of my mind.
2 days after I arrived back home, the NZeTA requested via the app was eventually granted...
By the way, I didn’t spend any money at Auckland airport (even though I would have loved something to eat and drink) and will avoid transiting in NZ in the future. The only countries which I experienced requiring a transit visa were the USA and Russia...

Worst app
Not fit for purpose. Misleading language, countless security screens, if you make one spelling mistake you can’t go back and fix it, start form from beginning. Terrible.
But I have good news! For a mere 55 dollars EXTRA, on top of the 12 or 9 dollars , whatever ! you can go to a travel agent and they can do it for you. It will save you hours, trust me. What a scam.

Great App
Quick and easy to use.
Couldn’t ask for a more efficient way to have my NZeTA granted. Just make sure you get a good lighting when scanning your passport.
I was trying to scan it at night time, so I found it difficult to avoid the reflections.
Once you’re done with the scan, it literally takes a couple of minutes to have it all done. And another 2 min to have your NZeTA approved. (Please note it might vary depending on what country issued your passport and and type of visa that is hold overseas). Overall 9.5/10

Totally useless
Firstly as they list the question you think you click yes or no next to the question but no it’s below. But the main thing the payment it just froze and you just can’t get past the pay now button. Entered my card details 5 times. Puts you of coming to NZ. I’ve visited 31 times over the past 15 years and now it’s just a pain.

Absolutely abysmal
I didn’t think it was possible to develop such a lousy app in 2020 but the NZ dept of immigration proved me wrong. The scanner doesn’t work - took me 15 mins of trying in countless different positions, it doesn’t accept Amex cards (seriously), and to top it off the scan made an error - read a ‘7’ as a ‘T’ - which apparently I now need to fix by visiting NZ immigration regular website.
All this effort was required to pay NZ$9 for a transit visa which gives me ‘the right’ to spend 1.5 hrs at Auckland airport waiting for a flight to the US. The last time I paid for the right to transit a country was in Russia in 1996 and at least they allowed me to stay there for a few days. NZ is an absolutely fantastic country but boy did they get this wrong.

Terrible experience
Only discovered the recent change in NZ visa rules this morning when I went onto Qantas website to check in for our flight to NZ Auckland tomorrow. Was totally shocked to see the message about the new NZETA and the potential 72hr delay in it being granted, especially as it was less than 24hrs before our flight. Needless to say I downloaded the App immediately as recommended and struggled with it for ages to try and 1.read my passport details and then 2. Get a decent photo. The bit about Australian residents not having to pay the additional tourist fee was confusing and I really thought I’d made a mistake at that point but paid the $9 and received a receipt straight away. 12 hrs later I’ve received no further email and the app just says ‘pending’ without any indication as to what is going on with the application. Can’t get through to Qantas to find out if we can get on the plane tomorrow with a ‘pending’ ETA cos the wait time is ‘more than 2hrs’. All in all a horrible experience altogether. Other reviewers are saying the app won’t get you a visa inside 72 hrs so I guess I’ll go and spend more money and try again on the website and hope one of them comes good overnight.

More than one family member
Entered myself and my wife, paid the fee and only one email sent to my wife’s address. Her visa was granted in 10 minutes. No email to my address- the app is confused and does not recognise more than one email address!! So I am left in limbo. Do I have to resubmit and pay again for mine? Do not use this app for more than one application.

Australian permanent resident but still had to pay the extra $35
I am an Australian permanent resident but every time I answered yes to this question, I received a message saying go back and re-answer the question if you’re not an Australian Permanent Resident. There was no choice to go forward and confirm the answer so the only way forward was to go back and answer that I am not an Australian permanent resident which means I have to pay the extra $35. Very frustrating

Are you serious? I hope NZD citizens get asked for this in every country they go.
I am trying to have my sister over in Australia for her summer holidays. She is only 14 and doesn’t speak a word of English and she is just transiting in Auckland. I can’t believe that NZD is asking for all this hustle just so people can pass by. This is an unnecessary layer of complexity that you guys added to profit from people going to Australia for absolutely no specific reason.You are so unprofessional that you don’t even support the app in different languages. Can you imagine that now I have to explain to a 14 old this procedure so she can make on her on mobile? I’m utterly shocked.
If you need money so bad why didn’t you enforce the airline to have that on the cost of the ticket and use the airline verified data to update whatever database you need?
Why the travelers have to go through this absolutely unnecessary procedure even when just connecting?
Going forward I’m never buying a flight form Australia to South America that connects in Auckland and at the end of the day you will miss out and Air NZD will miss business.
And I hope that kiwis get asked all over the world to pay for stupid fees and procedures like that whenever their planes have to refuel in a strange place.

Very bad scanner
I was trying to scan my husband’s passport hundred times with different angle to avoid light reflection (as said on the screen) either day or night with NO SUCCESS at all. So frustrating to do this app. How can this app be approved by NZ government to do the job?

Time Lag
After waiting in line for 20 minutes I was told I needed the AP to get the visa. I then downloaded the AP followed the steps then waited for 45 minutes for it to process the request. In waited in line for another 20 minutes to be told that the approval I had received wasn’t yet recognised on the Qantas system. There followed another period of 20 minutes waiting for the system to update. The disruption this caused to the line behind me was significant. Does the NZ government really need $9 per visitor that badly?

Apple user iphonex- software all updated, downloaded app via website as required. Scanned passport ok, take selfie photo as required by app, crash! Did it 5 times and still the same. It doesn’t work! How can this software be commissioned before testing and releasing to public for use?!?! Anyway that’s my feedback .

Can’t scan passport.
My wife and I have to travel to South America and we have a stop in NZ for maintenance or fuel. It’s already annoying that they make you pay just to wait for the flight in their country when I’ve never had to pay anything in any other country to change an airplane. Well, we want to pay the minimum wage and guess what, this app doesn’t scan the passport and keep saying to avoid reflections. Good on you New Zeland government I hope the world charge you too when you change flights in their airports. That’s just ridiculous.

Payment problem- bank card fraud
I followed the steps in this app. The first time I input the card information, it just went back to the page asking for payment. I felt strange, and input the payment information again. This time it succeeded. After that when I review the bank transactions, there were two transactions that day. One is correct, and another is us$99 to EVISA Application Badalona Es ESP. I googled that business name which is apparently a fraud one, and many people met such tragedy same as me. There must be some thing wrong with the payment of this APP because I never did anything else and never leave the app when I did the payment. I was shocked by this. Could not believe it happened in official APP. Hope it can be fixed and no more people lose their money.

USE THE WEBSITE NOT THE APP
If you have more than 72 hours then sure go ahead it’s a little clunky because it’s a new app but otherwise fine. If you DON’T have 72 hours go no where near this app. We’ve been waiting 15 hours so far and the app is still pending. We gave up on the app and tried the website and got it approved WITHIN A MINUTE.
All we can assume at this point is that because this is a new app and hasn’t been properly road tested there was some sort of issue. This must have required a person to solve and being a weekend wasn’t around. The end result is this app has cost us a flight, a hotel, a car rental and the cost of applying for this NZeTA.
Yes, we should’ve looked into this before the flight but as this system is less than 2 weeks old we missed it. We met several people from our flight that were in the same position so this isn’t uncommon. If time is a factor use the website, not this app.

Bad apps! Can’t even scan my passport
It is very unprofessional launching a government apps that can’t be used for applying country Visa. I tried whole day scanning my passport for whole family, not even one success. Wish you can reduce online visa application fees until this apps been upgraded and can use for majority passport.

Crash galore
Multiple photo attempts, then you get past that and answer the question, then you get past that and try to pay... at each of those stages it crashed multiple time u til I finally gave up. The app performance, for lack of a better word is just terrible 👎🏽

App doesn’t work
I couldn’t even get through to scanning my passport, it keeps saying to avoid reflection. Tried using my partner’s phone and seem to be the same issue. I just had to do it online and pay the extra and less hassle.

Testing hasn’t been done well for scanning passport. Keeps complaining about reflection and tried all sorts of lighting. The website failed to trigger payment. I am currently stuck between a rock and a hard place.
