Excellent app

I have tried many methods of learning a language over decades of living and working overseas. None work. Pimsleur is the only one that sticks even after months in between use. Repeating lessons until you have the pronunciation correct and the sounds hardwired makes them permanent so even if you take a break they return with relative ease. Thank you Pimsleur!

Great for conversation

Duolingo for vocabulary and grammar. But Pimsleur clear winner for pronunciation and repetitive nature giving confidence to speak and understand.
If you’re serious about learning French go with both if possible.
I started with Duolingo to get grasp of grammar and moved to Pimsleur after 6 months. Great combo

Great app - learning so fast

I love this app. I’m learning a lot quite quickly. I got it to learn my partners first language and he’s already so impressed with how much I learned and how good my accent is. It’s very good with teaching how to say the words properly because it breaks it down. All round really great teaching style. I wish there were more levels in Persian though.

Arabic and Tigrinya

I am currently using this app to learn Arabic as an English speak and I am picking it up so fast, I think the Pimsleur method is super effective for language learning and this is my first language I am learning other than English so I’m quite impressed with it. I really want to request strongly for you to include a Tigrinya and Amharic courses as soon as possible as I want to learn them next. Please make a Tigrinya course, there would be countless people interested in this language due to the vast number of Eritrean diaspora all over the world who need good resources to learn the language. Thank you

They take your money

I started a free trial in July 2025 and forgot to cancel the subscription. I didn’t realise I was getting charged monthly until now. I never even used the app properly. I only ever did one lesson total.
When I contacted them explaining that it was a mistake, and have never used the service, they said they didn’t care and that it’s non-refundable.
NEVER DO THEIR FREE TRIAL BECAUSE THEY WILL KEEP THE MONEY IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY LET IT LAPSE!!!!

Very limited Swedish. Very dated German terminology

Signed up for Swedish and found the learning good but “Level 1” is the entire Swedish offering. Raced through that level in a month. I can basically ask for directions, tell people my children are in the USA and order a glass of wine at the ‘theatre cafe’. And now there’s nothing else to learn. Sad, because I was really enjoying it. Why call something Level 1 if there are no other levels? It’s either deliberately deceptive or v poor use of language (from supposed language experts)
I then (foolishly) signed up for German, which does have lots of levels.
However, this one should come with a free Time Machine, so you can travel back to 20th century when the phrases you learn might be useful.
Things like ‘I am a keen photographer/ would you like to see some photos’ are odd (even creepy) when everyone is taking snaps on a smart phone. Also ‘Have you seen my notes’ for office talk. Really?
Come on guys- if you’re charging this much for a service, the least you can do is to ensure up to date relevant phrasing.

One of the best learning apps out there, but could improve

I think this is a really good app but to make it 10/10 and suitable for the high cost they should add animations for each lesson, I know this will be a great task due to the amount of lessons but it would be really cool to learn Japanese that way like you still listen to the lesson, it’s not replacing it, but that would make the app incredible for both visual and audio learners I think it would work like in some lessons there is stories where someone is with someone at a cafe or something like that ordering coffee you guys could make it so there’s a animation of two guys in a cafe with a speech bubble asking for coffee

I am so upset right now. I am trying to learn Italian currently so I downloaded this app. And at first it was exactly what I needed until I finished the first lesson. Anything after the first lesson you have to pay for and I just don’t have that kind of money. I need somewhere I can learn a language for free? Why must it cost money? It was so perfect.

Pimsleur

The Pimsleur (Non-Premium) Subscription only provides access to the 30 minute audio lessons are frankly a waste of time by themselves.
The real-value of Pimsleur is their Premium Subscription that has numerous practice exercises associated with each 30-minute audio lessons. This is where significant language learning can be achieved.
Pimsleur support seems to provide passive-aggressive support i.e. Pimsleur on the surface are polite but it takes multiple support requests to fix problems with your Pimsleur account. When Pimsleur actually have a verifiable technical problem with their course content, it possible to log a support case but don’t expect a response for 3 months.
Pimsleur Premium is worthwhile but their bait-and-switch marketing and passive-aggressive support is irritating.

I absolutely love this app so much I’m half polish and my pronunciation wasn’t the best. One of my friends suggested this app and it was the best decision to download it. There are 30 lessons all are 30 mins each and I’m only half way through my lessons and my family has said that I speak more clearly and overall pronunciation has gotten so much better. 110% recommend getting this app with Duolingo and you will be a pro with practice.

So much more effective than the high profile language apps

I have spent quite a bit of time learning various languages using some of the other very high profile and well-known apps out there. Unfortunately, much of this was without any real conversational language success.
I recently heard someone talking about Pimsleur method and its effectiveness for learning a language and I thought I’d give it a try. Literally within a month of doing half an hour of Pimsleur a day, I had significantly more confidence speaking and understanding the language than I achieved in the previous four or five months using other apps.
Quite an extraordinary method and one I wish I had known about years ago.

Pretty good tools for learning and memorising

I downloaded Pimsleur to learn Vietnamese as a beginner, and I completed the whole first level (30 lessons) and memorised them all, got high scores on the voice trainer. It look me a few months, so I would say I definitely tried to get the most out of the first level. But I am still nowhere near conversational like it advertises, I can mostly just read and pronounce words and simple sentences that I’ve learned already.
And the worst part is that there is only a level 1 for Vietnamese. Pimsleur tell me, are there any plans for a level 2?

Genuinely works.

I’ve used dozens of other apps, this is the only one that I unbelievably retain the knowledge from.
I’m full blown ADHD and I can still go to a Spanish restaurant and leave without having spoken English from 1 month on this app.. over 6 months ago.
2 weeks into Chinese and I went and ordered tea and spoke in small amounts at a Chinese restaurant, they understood my tones and all.
The only thing that lets you down is I haven’t seen any cultural slang, it seems very formal. But I haven’t progressed very far in. (EG: If someone was learning English for Australia, you wouldn’t say “How are you” you’d say “Howya G’arn?”)

Even after the first level of 30 lessons I was having conversations (attempting to at least) in spanish. Changed the game for travelling for me. This is the best language learning app I have used and I have tried many. I will definitely be using this app regularly in the short term, however, it is quite expensive and I’m not certain I’ll be able to use it in the long term.
The audio lessons are excellent with a great balance of challenging and achievable, and the extra functions are brilliant supplements to the learning process. The app is really well designed as it looks great visually and isn’t confusing to use. I would recommend this app to anyone willing to spend the money and time.
Hopefully it can become more accessible in the future.

Perfect for Learning to Speak a Language

I have used several apps over the past two years to teach myself Spanish. I am now up to Level 4. This is the best app I’ve found to actually learn how to speak Spanish. However, I do find the Voice Coach function a little frustrating. For no clear reason a word I have said successfully many times before in lessons will suddenly be rejected and I cannot pass that lesson. Nevertheless, the app gets my unqualified approval.

Free Trial Became Addiction

I was just using the trial for the pronunciation function, when I realised that I was picking up new vocab and ease of speaking within minutes. I listen and speak in the car and I was so shocked at how it works! Definitely staying subscribed, as I was considering paying $500 for lessons. Now I just use this everyday when I drive!
I wouldn’t really recommend for an absolute beginner as you would miss out on a lot of reading and grammar tips (especially for Japanese!!)

Best method

There is no replacement for learning how to produce the language. Input is still important but output cements a language like nothing else. Awesome that they finally have a polyglot option. The best system for spoken language

Get away from the textbooks and just listen and speak as in the real world conversation style. I have found no better system in 6 years of learning Japanese. It embeds the grammar better than a technical explanation. I ‘get’ grammar instinctively now. What a relief!!

I’ve tried all the other language learning apps. This one gets straight to what you’ll need to actually speak and have conversations in whatever language you’re learning.
I’m learning italian and the first lesson taught me how to say I do/don’t understand Italian, I understand a little italian, and how to ask if someone understands English.
The app also plays whilst closed, like music, so I can virtually use it whenever.

Best learning course

I enjoy all aspects of learning in this app, I have been subscribed for two years and paced myself through the French levels , I’m at level four now, my partner is French so I can practice with her as well when I want to , but there is no pressure on her by having my main learning be independent , so I don’t have to count on her to learn is great 👍

Spanish - while driving

Only early days but so far this has been great to have an app that I can use while I am driving and do the reading lessons later on . My friend has been using another app for a year and I am already catching up with them.

Fantastic way to learn a language

I was learning French via Duolingo for two years, but still found I wasn’t able to speak until I started using Pimsleur. Pimsleur builds on each lesson day by day, so before you know it, you can carry on a conversation.

French premium

Working my way through the 5 levels, currently halfway. Can’t speak highly enough of it. Congratulations to all involved. Very highly recommended

french

very underated! This is the best language learning app I've come across. and the fact that I willingly paid for it because it was so good and made me want to keep going. It has improved my general french so much.

Connects head to mouth

Studying from a textbook gives you lots of head knowledge but when push comes to shove it’s recall that gets the words out. This method forces your recall as it will teach you new words and then simulate different situations that force you to recall it. This method is the only method that has given me confidence to speak! A downside is that STILL this uses some old, formal language that you won’t hear on the streets. But this is common with most language teaching methods unfortunately.

Fantastic Casual learning!

I’m a plumber with some time on my hands and have always loved the Italian language and Italy, obviously! Found this app through a review online and started the 7 day trial. The app is great, can listen to it on a run or at home while doing chores. Such a great experience, love it

Is good but leaps too fast

The process is really good and the idea is there.
I can only speak ti French but the problem is the lessons leap from never hearing a phrase into full speed French in almost a single step. The speaker is not slow enough to pick up the subtle nuisances in the language to ensure the correct pronunciation. Too easy to mistake a ‘p’ sound for a ‘b’ sound etc.

The language course that delivers

This method works and is the one that got my from knowing a few phrases to speaking within months. I refer it to everyone I know because I am so impressed.

Solid

I subscribed to Premium and it has been fun going through all my languages again. Maybe it was my age but I was more conversational in French and Italian when I was using Pimsleur and I look forward to testing myself again. One suggestion: more options in the settings to toggle when the audio cuts out. Personally, I’m not in a car, but the audio will stop playing for too many reasons and it is getting annoying having to constantly press play as it interferes with concentration.

Accelerated learning

I have tried many language learning apps, but for me Pimsleur is by far the most effective way of learning a new language. I listen to a lesson each day, a few times to make sure that I absorb all of the material. The addition of flash cards, and other ways of learning really helps. It would be nice to access multiple languages on the monthly plan, but this way I am focussed on a single language. Give it a try, and accelerate your learning of a new language.

Great course but development suggestion

The course is great and the app is nice to use but I think it would be great to build a “tick” feature in next to the completed exercises (eg reading). I like to do these after the listening but loose track of what exercises I have and haven’t done. Thank you!

It works

Italian is my language of choice and I wish to read write and speak it with as little Australian accent as possible. I know this app has helped me enormously. It is my go to, unlike all the others I have.
Try it in your choice of language and see how you go. But one has to keep at it.

Best language learning app!

I got this app in hopes of achieving my goal of learning Japanese. It didn’t let me down! In ten minutes I was able to have an entire conversation with someone who spoke Japanese! It’s brilliant and there are so many languages to learn. I would recommend to people wanting to learn any certain language! This app deserves 5 stars!

App improvements

Hi Team,
I had a sudden interest in learning German when I had some backpacker friends living with me. However they have since moved on and my motivation has decreased. I think Notifications to push your learning will help myself excel. Everyone has a very busy lifestyle and once out of routines you often don’t make time for your learning !

Good app

Better alternative to time poor individuals who still want to learn a language. Easier than Duolingo. Actually taught you grammar as well and allowed you to expand your own learning after completing all the 3-5 levels of the course

Usually a great app...

But it won’t open anymore? I sign into my user, after which I reach the page to select what lesson level I’m at. I click on the level, and then it just goes to a loading screen. Never loading up the lesson plan for the level I’ve chosen. Thereafter, every time I open up the app all I get is the same loading screen.

“Meh” app

I’ve been studying a language for 6 months and looking for additional / better learning material. My problem with this app: cannot test to a specific level (given my level 1 isn’t helpful). Cannot test or trial higher levels (or maybe you could, but I hit a pay wall). Odd method of learning in this decade: for example, in Russian, rather than Cyrillic letters, the lessons or tests were in English pronunciation. Company need to reconsider direction of app in order to exist in the next 2 years...

Best language app

I was conversational in Indonesian after completing level 1 and spoke it a lot during my time in Indonesia. The locals were very impressed! I’m conversational in French now too, after completing level 1 French, and ready for my Europe trip! I did also use some books and other resources to help me, but without Pimsleur I wouldn’t have learnt how to actually speak and pronounce everything properly. I’m a really busy person with my own business and a second job also, so there’s no way I’d be able to find time to study languages if it wasn’t for the Pimsleur lessons on my phone, which I listen to usually while driving, cooking, doing exercise, or doing housework. I have recommended it to many friends as they usually opt for the “free” language apps but I never hear of them getting very good results. You get what you pay for in my opinion. Thanks Pimsleur :)

Finally!

This the first program I’ve found (and I’ve used many) that improve your spoken French.
Before Pimsleur French my reading, listening and writing comprehension were way way ahead of my speaking skills. Pimsleur is closing that gap.
