App wouldn’t load

I went to charge my car for the first time today and found the app wouldn’t load. In the end I had call support and they had to start the charge from their end. I was told to make sure I had the latest update but I’ve only just down loaded the app and joined. Hopefully I do t call to call them every time.

Once started it actually worked really well..

Useless - update credit card

When your local council uses only Chargefox and its app decides that perfectly valid credit cards have expired, then Chargefox is no better than a useless rock. Support will escalate though so you can just sit there with a flat battery whilst they faff around for a day or week or month.

Doesn’t work

App doesn’t work. Charging station didn’t show up on app. Had to ring them to charge me up remotely. The service desk had no idea what to do. Asked me to re-update the app, lock the door , wind up the windows multiple times. When finished charging had to ring again cos the cable wouldn’t unplug. This is 2025 ! Charging a car , sure , is not as easy as buying petrol but ……

Weird update

Update said new look yet the look is exactly the same. Are the developers invoicing Chargfox for something they haven’t done? Secondly the ‘help’ questions are some of the most limited I’ve ever seen. It’s incredible what’s not there. One of the most obvious would be deleting a vehicle without deleting your account. A basic requirement if you sell a car! Or add another car. Why would you not be able to have a second car on the account? But no, no information. Amateur hour.

Why do i need an app to charge my car?

I don’t want to download a thing, sign up, validate my email account, sign in, get my validation code, enter the code, add a payment service, validate my account again, find the charge station and then hope it works.

Terrible experience most of the time

Same experience each time .. Stood outside the charge fox charging station trying to get someone to resolve charging issues.

It should be as simple as plugging in, tapping my card to pay and charging but for some reason all charging issues done through a terrible app which always leads to bad experiences.

Charge fox claims to make EV charging simple but it’s done the opposite.

Faulty chargers everywhere.

This review is not the app itself, it’s for the Chargefox network. Chargers are faulty for months before they fix them, what’s worst, many of them show functional on the app and once you plug in, the car either charges for few minutes and then drops, or doesn’t not charge at all.

This happens with all three EVs I own, all three different brands.

Don't get me started on how many of these charging stations don't work. I was stranded in a rural town when all 3 chargers in that town were down.

The system is quite painless now on my iPhone. However, I really wish it integrated with the Apple Watch and provided a widget and the ability to put it on Lock Screen: if it does I am struggling to find it.

Worst Charging Network in all of Australia.

I have been driving an EV for years now and I have never encountered a worse charging network and a worse app in my whole life. Nothing works. Neither port worked. It took me over half an hour to even get the app to respond and no matter how many times I disconnected and reconnected my cable to either port, it would just not work. Avoid at all costs.

Idle Charge

Chargefox will dock an illegal idle charge (without appropriate signage or warning) even if you are parked in a timed spot and can stay parked there for the allowed time. Absolutely ridiculous

Good communication feature

Having the ability to leave a message to fellow users about how long the intended charge is going to be has been a good update.

One addition to this would be to include the option to show if other users are waiting on site to charge next.

Difficult

Not a great first impression, wouldn’t charge had to call and get them to do it remotely. One charge station had a fault but didn’t find out until I called, didn’t show on screen.

Too many steps to get charging, Evie charge is sooooo much better, with Evie I just plug in and go.

Unreliable and expensive

The app/charging network is unreliable and functionality limited.

The pricing especially at standard 50kw spaces is pathetically high compared to other networks. They have a monopoly in Launceston owning all chargers. Made simply = made simple from the developer, not for the customer. With no alternative I’m at a loss.

Needs CarPlay/watchOS Support

I honestly don’t why the many of the reviews here are complaining about Chargefox - granted, I’ve only ever used Chargefox EV chargers at one particular location… But I’ve never had a problem with them, and they have always worked well for me, even if the interface (the way the application looks and works) is a little clunky.

It would be great to see Chargefox updated / upgraded to include widget, CarPlay and / or Apple Watch (watchOS) support, as these would allow users to more easily find a nearby EV charger, identify when said EV charger is available, monitor the status of charging and be notified when charging is complete.

When you consider the purpose of this application, it actually seems a little bizarre that widget, CarPlay and / or Apple Watch (watchOS) are not supported.

For payment needs more options

Biggest drawback I have seen is recently I lost my bank card and I couldn’t charge publicly cos of lack of payment options

Kindly add PayPal or Apple and Google pay on the app as method of payment so in case due to unforeseen circumstances people can pay as they go or atleast let people add some balance in the app directly through bank or some creative solution

Only one user per car

App only allows one user per car - VIN can only be used once -so families can’t have separate accounts and payments, and you can’t have separate business and personal charging records. Have confirmed this by calling support.

Terrible experience

The money came out of my BANK ACCOUNT!!! The car didn’t even charge!

The app has a bug, it shows it’s charging yet the car is still the same after 40 mins of charging, but it shows up in your bank statement as your car charged and on the app!!

Please ask your dev team to open this app in Xcode and enable iPad support. Zero reason not to provide a full screen app experience for iPad users. It will make the app significantly better vs using the iPhone app stretched. This is the first time installing your app and its off to a bad start already

Chargers stop working

Their chargers stop working and when contacting support they are not sure what the issue is and they don’t what their error codes mean, I’ve called many times and no one their knows, so it’s not just one person who is incompetent, would not recommend their products until they can sort fix their issues with the products and give their support team enough information to be able to troubleshoot issues

No sign to indicate charge outage

No where on the charger showing that it is not working. Parked, unlocked and plug in then app show that it’s not available. Call CS then get a voice message saying that it has network outage. Can’t charge. Super annoying!

Chargefox more like charge fail

Twice I have tried to use charge fox and it never works. The first time it took me 3-4 goes and swapping stations to finally getting it work. Support was good and refund the money for being difficult. Today the station didn’t work again after three goes. I rang support and this lady was just difficult would cut me off and refuse to let me talk. I gave up and left.

Unreliable charge stations.

On my trip up the north coast I encountered 2 stations with faults. At one that I tried for 30 minutes to try and charge, I called support and was told that the station had had a fault for several months but wasn’t indicated in the app. Very frustrating.

Misleading or deceptive app?

App clearly displays certain charging stations are free to users with a subscription, but then charges are applied to your account. Chargefox claims that only some of the bays indicated as free are actually free! So their UI is either terrible at best or deceptive at worst. To make matters worse, the bays they claim are actually part of the subscription are incompatible with the OEM supplied vehicle equipment. What is the point of having a subscription that includes bays you can’t use!? Customer service incapable of comprehending why a misleading or deceptive app is unacceptable and refused to refund charge.

Dreadful support…..

Most ChargeFox chargers don’t work most of the time. They keep pushing out uptime stats that are clearly bs to anyone with experience trying to use their network.

The only response you ever get from support is “we don’t own the chargers and have let the owner know”. In some cases chargers still showing on their network have been broken for MORE THAN A YEAR. Why still show them? Clearly they will never be fixed.

You also get the same bs “We don’t own the chargers” response to chargers that are owned by NRMA who own ChargeFox. It’s just gaslighting of the highest order.

Company going downhill

When they were a startup Chargefox were responsive and agile if there was a problem they’d fix it pretty quickly. Nowadays faulty/inoperable chargers are the norm and customer service is non existent. I had hoped after the NRMA buyout things would improve but they haven’t they’ve only gotten worse. 24x7 phone support never answers and tickets logged are not responded to. Don’t rely on their chargers if you are travelling regionally.

Don’t expect just because the app tells you a station is online that it is… I spent the last 28 hours in Cunnamulla QLD charging on a 13 amp outlet at a pub rather than spending my Australia Day with family… Both stations showed online, both the tritium 75kW and the AC charger, both offline…

Use this app with caution and always plan for an alternative as 50% of the time with Chargefox you will need one.

Rubbish

Australia is not smart enough for electric vehicles.

Every other transaction in the world, you can tap a card. The EV network requires you to download multiple apps, for some mysterious reason. And half the chargers are malfunctioning at any given time.

I don’t think there was a grown-up in the room when this system was devised.

Woeful reliability of chargers

In the 2.5 years of EV ownership, it's been an uphill battle to charge at Chargefox chargers on the Gold Coast in Australia.

The chargers are almost always broken and not available or running at a reduced speed

Service of the chargers by Tritium is non existent and take months to get back to proper working order only to blow another component a few days later

The app is fine but the overall experience of trying to find a working charger is horrible

Unreliable app and chargers

Given EV’s are relatively new and public chargers are even newer, it baffles the mind on how unreliable Chargefox chargers are. One or more of my local chargers and constantly out of order and aesthetically, they look like they’ve been around since the 90’s. Evie chargers look fresh and new. Need to step your game up, Chargefox.

The app is okay but for some dumb reason, even though I’ve set my charge limit to 100%, it always cuts off at 80%. It takes 2 more attempts (after hanging the bowser and replugging) to get it above that, with the highest charge percentage I’ve had being 94%.

Phone screen size only! Why?

Most apps will adapt to the various sizes screens of the wide variety devices available today. This is a standard feature of user interface design tools, and has been since Unix XWindows. So why does this app limit itself to a tiny bit of my iPad screen and not take advantage of its size to display its maps to their best ?

Highly unreliable / scam

Yes they provide free charging. Bad customer support most of the times locations shown on the map are wrong. Customer supports says they only know the location shown on the map and it is worse if it is an underground car park. In one place the car started charging before activating it through the app. Then I had to call support hot line to disconnect as there was no disconnect button on the charging station. If they offer a call back service due to a long waiting period “do not take it’ they never call back. Worst part is someone is using my chargfox account to fast charge on my credit card , support hotline says they can not have access to accounts and send an email to their info email, sent email no response so far. All these things I experienced during 7 day period in Sydney.

Takes forever to start

The station takes forever to start charging. Given that it’s not a fast charger the best toh could do is get your app to interact faster with your charging station. I had to stop the initialization a few times before I finally saw that it started charging. Also, come out with some signs asking non EV users to not use the spot as parking while waiting to pick up their kids. The location is St Leonard’s, Sydney.

Needs to work on poor internet

Works fine when you have a fast connection but when you’re on a road trip you’re often lucky to get one bar 3G coverage. In that case the app keeps telling you you’re on a slow connection. This is precisely the time you’re trying to find a charger and work out if it’s available or in use.

Terrible App and Customer Support

Why can’t you plan a journey using the app with an estimated range? You ask for the make and model of vehicle and this is such a basic function so surely could be implemented easily. Most of the Chargefox stations in Perth are broken and have been for some time and the company don’t seem to care. Finally, their customer support team is absolutely useless. I enquired on when a station would be repaired and the person simply said “I don’t know”. Really need some competition. Hopefully Ampol and BP will ramp up their charging infrastructure and we can be done with this terrible company.

Added over 2 hours to our journey from Melbourne to Canberra just waiting for a charging station to become vacant. Almost got stranded in Gundagai due to all stations there being out of service. Luckily we checked 1 hour out of Gundagai and managed to stop at Evie in Tarcutta where all the stations were working.

Room for improvement

Didn’t get to charge my hire car at destination due to being occupied for several hours by an inconsiderate Tesla owner. Was a very annoying experience needing to constantly keep checking the status. Needs three new features: 1) alert when free; 2) reserve if in use; 3) penalty charges for overstaying.

Still new to the EV charging world but I prefer the Chargefox network. Good range of plug types including DC and type 2 for my leaf. Also free charging options! Thank you Chargefox!

Not expandable to multi-car garages

Own more than one EV? Chargefox only allows one car to be set in the app. The use of the app at some chargers can be slow to connect. It shows that this is definitely an emerging market and not firmly established. Chargefox: please fix these friction points in the user experience. Tesla has announced more seamless experience coming with their destination charger network allowing businesses to recover the cost of charging. It would be a real shame not to have a healthy, competitive, Australian alternative.

Often unreliable

If you’re connected to one of their slow chargers and you’d like to know if a fast charger elsewhere has become available, you can’t do that, because you can’t browse the charging network until you disconnect your current charge session. Just like the existing network of chargefox fast chargers, this app has reached a stagnant hiatus, and the company doesn’t seem bothered by it.
